Ever wondered how worms turn food waste into compost? Here’s a look inside the different layers of mine so you can see how it works! Each time you fill you a tray, you add a new one on top with fresh waste and the worms move on up through, composting as they go! 🪱 #wormfarm #wormery #wormcomposting #composting #gardening #allotment #allotmentlife

Worms don’t like extremes, they thrive best in steady, mild conditions. That’s why it’s important to give your Wormery a little extra care as the temperature drops this winter. 👉 Wooden vs plastic wormeries
Wooden wormeries have an advantage: they keep worms cooler in summer and warmer in winter. But since most people buy ready-made plastic wormeries, it’s all about where and how you place them. 👉 Temperature matters
In winter, try to keep your wormery somewhere slightly warmer like a shed, garage, greenhouse, or even tucked up against a sheltered wall. Avoid leaving it out in the open where frost can bite. 👉 Moisture control
Worms need damp conditions, but too much moisture in winter can be dangerous. If the bedding gets waterlogged, it can freeze, trapping and killing the worms. Don’t add too much water, keep an eye on drainage, add shredded cardboard or paper if things look too wet and always make sure any potential excess liquid can escape. 👉 Feeding carefully
Worms slow down in colder weather. Feed smaller amounts, less often, so scraps don’t sit and rot. Keep an eye on this to get an idea of how quickly your worms are eating. By taking these simple steps, you’ll give your worms the best chance to keep working happily all year round, turning waste into nutrient-rich castings for the spring! Want to compost but don’t have space in the garden or any garden at all? Might be worth trying a wormery. Our worms manage some of our food and veg waste but not all. And they don’t like onions or garlic. I guess they want to say fresh with such close proximity 🤣🤣🤣 Three layers and the worms move between all three, eating and moving the food as they go. If you don’t have too much waste it’s definitely worth a go. The worm juice that’s produced is great for the plants. #worms #compost #gardening #foodwaste

A whole year of worms eating and pooping created eight sacks of 10mm-sieved compost, which grows amazing plants as you can see from the lettuce in my last photo, in the small cells of a CD 60 tray - one litre will fill 30 of those cells. Compost is the ultimate for improving soil quickly, there’s a range of possibilities, including from wood and tree leaves and it’s such a versatile aspect of gardening. The second photo has a bed with new garden compost, and the path has wood one year old, sieved to 12 mm. #wormery #compost #soillife #nodig #worms

I have wanted to buy a wormery for some time, but I was totally inspired to get out and make my own after I listened to an old podcast that @diaryofaladygardener did with Anna from @the_urban_worm Why would you want a womery you ask? For the worm castings (poo)! 💩 - You can put a handful of the castings in a watering can, fill it up with water and let it stew for a bit and BOOM, free fertiliser with all the nutrients plants need for growth! - Makes your soil 50% more moisture retentive - Makes soil more resilient to more drastic weather (drought/heavy rain) - Contains the enzyme chitinase that dissolves chitin, which many pest insects are made up of. So, it's a natural pesticide/repellent! - Have loads of beneficial microorganisms that will help your plants fight off things such as powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and other fungal problems. Along with the poo, you also have the leachate, which is the liquid that the bottom container catches, which can also be used as a fertiliser at a 1:10 ratio with water. Things to think about if you decide to make your own worm farm: - Only use composting worms (you can buy these online if you don't have any) as earthworms live deep down in the soil and will not like being in a worm farm - Use an opaque container as worms don’t like the light - Worms don’t like rain vibrations, so put your worm farm somewhere covered if you can - Worms like to live in temperatures between 10-30⁰C, so it may be worth moving the wormery to a shed or garage in the winter - Worms will start to slow down in winter so you will want to feed them less during this time - They don’t like acidic environments so you should avoid putting in citrus fruits and onions - They breathe through their skin so you should avoid putting oily foods in, or they could suffocate - If you put too much food in it can lead to hotter temperatures, due to bacteria multiplying, which the worms don’t like #wormery #vermiculture #wormfarm #showusyourwormfarm #diywormfarm #wormpoop #wormcastings #wormcompost #handmadeuk #1000wormfarmers #wormup

A not so sourdough related post, but something exciting I wanted to share with you 😊 A few weeks back I’ve received this lovely wormery from @wiggly.wigglers . I’ve seen one at some of my friends and since then I’ve always wanted one. And this one is also soo pretty (and it comes in different colours too) I have no pets, so I treat the wormery like one. Feeding them regularly with good stuff (fruit and veggie leftovers, eggshell, coffee ground), which otherwise would go to waste In return, they will give me compost for my garden and for my indoor plants. It’s a win win 🏆 Isn’t this exciting? Anyone around having one? And since I’m new to this, any tips you’d like to share with me? #wormery #wormerycompost #compost #compostingworms #composting

Wormeries are ideal if you do not have space for a compost. Worms will break down your kitchen waste and make it into compost to use on the garden. You can also collect a liquid in the bottom container to use as a rich, liquid plant food if diluted at 1 part to 10 parts water. Make sure the top container where the worms live have lots of holes for air circulation for the worms. Do not use earthworms. Instead use compost worms (red or tiger worms) You can find them under stones or in compost. Or you can buy them. Keep wormery at temp between 5 and 20 degrees in shade. If kept outside, place in shed over winter or insulate. Do not drill holes in lid if keeping outside as it will fill with rain. Just drill base of top container and sides. Feed worms fruit and veg scraps. Avoid dairy, meat, citrus, onion etc. If material feels dry, water slightly as worms prefer slighly moist conditions.  #growyourown #compost #composting #wormery #vermicomposting #vermiculture

And now I have worms living in my house 😒 Our tiny wormery is great though and now it's been a couple of days she can take the black card off and look at all the tunnels that the worms have made. After a week we will release them back into the garden and they'll be able to tell all their friends about their adventures! Thanks for the activity idea @mudnbloom. It was a big hit! 🪱🪱🪱

As it’s winter and not a lot is going on above the soil level right now, let’s talk about below the soil and soil health! One of the best and easiest things we can do as gardeners is make our own compost. We do this in as many ways as possible, we have a couple of @hotbincomposting bins, a huge compost bin in the garden and this wormery, which takes all of our food scraps from the kitchen and turns them into beautiful black compost! I had this as a Christmas present over 15 years ago from @wiggly.wigglers, waaay before Instagram was a thing! Did you know that it’s said there’s more organisms in the soil than stars in the sky! Looking after our soil is vital for the health of our gardens, the planet and us! We’ve evolved with the friendly bacteria that lives in the soil, it’s also inside us! Getting your hands in the soil is good for you! Not an ad, I bought these or was given them as a present. #compost #cottagekitchen #growyourown #wormfarm #wormery #compostbin #hotcompost #thebeegardener

Three ways to keep pests out of your compost ♻️ 1) Use a compost tumbler. Enclosed and easy to turn which keeps airflow up and access down. 2) Try bokashi fermentation for kitchen scraps. Low odour and fast. Bury it or add to your heap later to feed the microbes. 3) Rodent-proof the base. Lay 6 mm galvanised mesh under your bin or sit it on paving so burrowers can’t dig in. And sometimes we just have to accept a few curious visitors… 🙃 Save this for later and share with a compost-curious friend. Bristol community composting with Generation Soil.
