And don’t let anyone push you down with negativity or totally brain dead and altogether unoriginal takes! On a real note, no agent has ever said this exact thing to me, but I have received many notes that have nothing to do with my story or my writing and everything to do with ‘marketability’ or ‘politicizing’. Always be open to real feedback but don’t change your writing just to sell a book or make the public happy! 5 months ago, I’d never written a word of fiction. Today, I’m 82,000 words into the draft my first novel 3 simple rules have kept me consistent: (1) Write 1000 words per day (2) Never put up a ‘ZERO’ (3) Never skip twice Now, how’d a land on 1000 words per day? Simple. I ljust looked to other authors I admire. Christopher Ruocchio and Ryan Cahill have both said they do ~2000 words per day on average during a Draft 1. I don’t write full-time. I run a 15-person content agency that has 20+ client, and I write before and after my work on that for the day. A thousand words has been a good sweet spot that allows me to stay consistent without burning myself out. You’ll also notice the math doesn’t quite add up. That’s because early on I didn’t have these rules in place. There was an entire month where I didn’t draft anything. But in the past two months, I’ve really found a groove, and since the beginning of September, I’ve drafted about 60,000 of the 80,000 words. #sciencefantasy #sciencefictionbooks #indieauthorlife
