These tiny fish play a big role in understanding aggressive cancers like melanoma 🐟🧬 Because of their p53 tumor suppressor loss-of-function and the gain of the most common mutation found in human melanoma (brafV600E), these zebrafish are genetically predisposed to develop melanoma the same way humans do. Though they may not look like us, they’re paving the way toward better, noninvasive treatments against melanoma. Curious about zebrafish or cancer research? Drop your questions below — there are no bad questions here! I love talking science and I promise, if you’re wondering about it, someone else probably is too! #zebrafish #zebrafishresearch #womeninstem #biology #science #mutant #fish #cancerresearch #scienceexplained #scicomm #lablife

Injecting a zebrafish embryo to induce mutations. Science by my friends! I don’t work with zebrafish myself, but I’ve had the chance to watch their amazing work up close, and it’s always so amazing. Developmental biology is important to understanding how diseases form and progress in humans, and zebrafish are a powerful model for that. Plus, their images are always so AMAZING! Let me know if you want to see what these mutants look like later on! #phd #research #reels #phdwithseraya #studywithme #studentlife #gradschool #gradlife #phdlife #studentlife #science #research #stem #gradstudent #zebrafish #molecularbiology #gradschool #stemlife #womeninstem

COOKING EVERY FISH IN THE WORLD 🐟 🌍 Episode 106 - Zebrafish / Zebra Danio • BIN: Danio rerio FR: Poisson-zèbre / petit danio DE: Zebrabärbling / Zebrafisch ESP: Pez cebra / danio cebra IT: Danio zebrato / pesce zebra SRB-CRO: Zebrica • Ingredients (makes 12 lollipops): 12 zebrafish (or any small tropical fish) 200 g sugar 100 ml water 1 tsp lemon juice 1 ginger & lemongrass tea bag • Recipe: 1. Place the fishies on a silpat mat and roast at 220C for 5-7 minutes. Remove from the oven and stick the fried fish onto a toothpick or lollipop stick. 2. Sugar syrup: bring the water to a boil, then add the tea and let seep for 3 minutes. Remove tea bag, add sugar and lemon juice and return to a boil. Cook to 150C. 3. Fish lollipop: quickly pour a little sugar syrup onto the silpat, place the fish in the middle and pour a second droplet over it. Let cool down and enjoy!! • #lollipop #fish #fishrecipes

A week ago I microinjected zebrafish embryos with a plasmid carrying GFP—the gene that makes cells glow green. Today I finally got to check if it worked, and it did! Under the scope, you can already see bright green cells in the brain, and on the confocal every glowing dot is a single cell that took up the plasmid. There’s something so surreal about watching living tissue literally light up in front of you. Science feels a little bit like magic sometimes. 🐟💚 #zebrafish #gfp #microscopy #molecularbiology #genetics #fluorescence #confocalmicroscopy #gradschoollife #sciencelife #labrat #researchlife #biologylover #sciencereels #discoveries #womeninstem #phdlife #behindthescience #sciencemagic #glowingcells #cellbiology

Yawning has been documented in a wide range of species, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals. and birds. While yawning has previously been observed in fish, yawn contagion — the phenomenon of yawns being elicited by seeing or hearing others yawn — has mainly been reported in warm-blooded species, where it is thought to help coordinate social behaviour and motor activities in groups of animals. New research published in Communications Biology finds that zebrafish can not only yawn but also ‘catch yawns’ from other yawning zebrafish. Elisabetta Palagi and colleagues at the University of Pisa in Italy monitored footage from fish observed to be yawning. They trained a deep learning model to differentiate between yawns and breathing activity, both of which involve opening of the mouth. 75% of zebrafish yawns were accompanied by specific fin stretching and lowering of the tail, which was not observed in breathing activities. The authors note that the demonstration of contagious yawning in zebrafish is the first example of this phenomenon in cold-blooded species. This study, captured through live imaging in a zebrafish model, reveals an unexpected role for certain brain-associated macrophages in neurovascular repair. Immune Cells Assisting Brain Blood Vessel Repair Rather than acting solely as debris-clearing immune cells, specialised macrophages in the zebrafish brain were observed extending processes toward damaged microvessels and helping approximate torn capillary ends. By mechanically interacting with the injured vessel, these cells accelerated restoration of vascular integrity in this experimental model. This finding expands the understanding of immune vascular interactions in the brain and suggests a context specific repair mechanism. Endothelial cells remain central to vascular reconnection, but macrophages may actively assist the process under certain conditions. What you’re seeing isn’t just mesmerizing—it’s molecular. Behind this dance is a detailed single-cell RNA sequencing dataset that captures zebrafish development, embryo by embryo, cell by cell. Tools like @chanzuckerbergbiohub Zebrahub help scientists explore how life unfolds from its earliest moments—with all the complexity and coordination that happens beneath the surface. Even if you don’t know the science, you can still feel it: biology is full of wonder. #Zebrafish #SciArt #Science #OpenScience
