GROWING ZUCCHINI VERTICALLY - With a single stake and a bit of twine, you can train your zucchini to grow upward instead of sprawling across the soil. As the plant grows, tie it up every few inches to keep it supported and heading skyward, turning what’s usually a space-hog into a compact, manageable producer.
The real advantage comes down to airflow and light. When zucchini leaves are lifted off the ground and spaced out vertically, moisture dries faster and air circulates more freely around the plant. That makes it much harder for fungal issues like powdery mildew to take hold. At the same time, better light exposure improves photosynthesis, helping the plant put out stronger growth and more consistent fruit.
As it climbs, removing the lower leaves helps even more. You reduce the risk of soil-borne disease while redirecting energy toward fruit production instead of excess foliage. The result is a healthier plant, easier harvesting, and no more lost zucchinis hiding under a jungle of leaves. Chaos solved.

At this point in the growing season be sure to check your courgettes regularly!
Turn your back for a minute and your tender little courgette has grown into a woody marrow! 😬
Although, the word ‘Courgette’ derives from the French ‘Courge’ which means ‘Gourd’ or ‘Marrow’, so ‘Courg-ette’ actually translates to ‘small gourd or marrow’ which is the term we generally use here in the UK.
The word ‘Zucchini’ derives from Italian meaning ‘little marrow’ which is the term generally used across North and Central America.
So really they’re always marrows, just we generally prefer the small ones! 😂
I harvest mine at around half the size of this one and often with the flower still intact.
Regularly harvesting them promotes the plant to continue to produce fruits for longer.
Once they’ve grow into a ‘large’ marrow they do store for longer which is useful! and I will still use them at this size, if I miss a couple here and there, but I’ll utilise them in different ways in the kitchen such as stuffing them, using them to make chutney or even in cake! 😋

THHow to obtain beautiful courgette / zucchini harvests in pots 🤗💚
You can grow courgettes in pots of 18L. Indeed give them your best sunny spot, mulch them for better water retention, and when they start producing, a boost of organic phosphorus fertiliser will help a lot!
To obtain a courgette, hand pollinate them as shown in this reel. The pollen of the male flower (thin stem) has to go into the female flower (larger stem looking like a small courgette). Simply use a q-tip to pollinate them.
They will grow very fast with warm weather. You can obtain fresh food in just a few days and homegrown veggies is just the best, right?
