👉The drop it method everyone gets wrong 👉Most people wait until their puppy steals something valuable, then panic and try to negotiate. That teaches puppies to evaluate trades and hold out for better offers. ✅Learn how to teach it: Step 1: Say “drop it” with nothing in their mouth. Immediately scatter a treat on the floor while pointing them out excitedly. (I use their kibble) Step 2: Repeat a few times a day over a course of 4-5 days, until they get visibly excited hearing “drop it” because it predicts a party at their feet. Step 3: Now try with low value objects like toys. They drop immediately because they know something better is coming. Step 4: Gradually work up to higher value items socks, tissues, sticks. The foundation holds. 👉👉👉Common mistakes to avoid: Don’t grab things from their mouth that creates keep-away games. Don’t chase them when they have something you’re teaching them stealing gets attention. Don’t only practice when they actually steal, that’s too late. Practice daily with nothing in their mouth first, then with approved items you give them. ✅Why classical conditioning works: The emotional response happens before the thinking brain kicks in. During my time at Drill Sergeant school I wanted to be perfect with my modules and class work wasn’t until the 3rd module I messed up . I learned more in the failures in that school than the times I got it 100% correct . I was able to pitch the last module perfectly but only because I knew how it felt to hear the words “ you may now begin your second attempt.” I was able to go back and train Drill Sergeant Candidates in the unit better because I was able to mentor them on what not to do and what to do better so they could avoid my mistakes . My failures in that school and life in general taught me more than my first time GOs. Embracing failure doesn’t mean you have to live there and wallow in it .
