George Kittle’s deception play came early in his career with the San Francisco 49ers and quickly became one of his most talked-about trick efforts. In that particular play, Kittle intentionally acted like he was going to dive or fall near the line of scrimmage. The purpose wasn’t to avoid contact or lose yardage — it was to make the defender think the play was over and sell a fake, confusing the linebacker covering him.
The defender — Rams linebacker Cory Littleton — bit on the fake, anticipating Kittle would go down and stay put. Instead, as soon as Littleton hesitated, Kittle jumped back up and sprinted into open space downfield. His sudden shift from “falling” to running created separation, and quarterback Nick Mullens was able to find him for a 25-yard reception that turned into a big gain for the 49ers offense.
What made this play especially clever was how well it fit into San Francisco’s offensive scheme. Head coach Kyle Shanahan had actually called the “tight end dive” play with Kittle’s unique athleticism in mind, trusting that he could pull off the deception and still make a big play. Kittle later explained that he trusted the call and knew the timing — selling the fake at just the right moment — would trick the defense effectively.
This play didn’t just get Kittle open in that moment — it also set up a rushing touchdown later in the same drive, showing how a well-executed deception can have cascading effects on a team’s momentum and scoring opportunities.
