MUIt's part of our community identity now—the 336 area code. And like everything else it has a history! Area codes in North Carolina only go back to 1947. Back in the middle of the 20th century, 704 covered the whole state. Then in 1954, part of the state was split off into 919. That lasted for decades. But eventually the numbers started to run out, a problem that accelerated with the dawn of the cellular age. In 1993, Winston-Salem was part of the state that got swept into a 910 area code. And then, in 1997, into the 336. On December 15, 1997, callers with select prefixes (i.e., the first three digits of a 7-digit phone number) could be reached by dialing the 336 or the 910 area code; a year later, the 336 became mandatory. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, 336! You don't look a day over 28 years old! You've got our number, and our heart!
