FEAnother great landing by one of my colleagues, smoothly guiding down the Queen of the Skies to its home-base of @frankfurtairport after a long flight.
@Lufthansa is one of only three airlines in the world to ever operate the passenger Boeing 747-8 and has the largest fleet in the world! Yet, they are pretty rare and this is another unique moment to take a look into the cockpit during the 747-8‘s actual flying operation!
I am grateful to be able to share these moments, as this is an absolute dream come true. Every student pilot dreams of being a 747 pilot and here I am, living that dream! Be sure to follow me for more captivating insights from the flight deck of the greatest aircraft ever built!
The approach flown was a modern GLS Y approach to runway 07R. This approach is based on GPS signals augmented by a ground station and is the latest technology, allowing steeper, curved and more efficient approaches compared to a traditional ILS.

LULufthansa Boeing 747 Business Class upper deck vs lower deck. Which one do you prefer?
Lufthansa’s Boeing 747 features 8 open First Class suites, 80 Business Class flat-bed seats with 180 degrees recline, 32 Premium Economy recliner seats, and 244 standard Economy Class seats. The 80 Business Class seats are spread over three cabins:
- The largest Business Class cabin is located on the lower deck (behind First Class) and features 6 rows of 36 seats, arranged in a 2-2-2 layout.
- The smallest Business Class cabin is also located on the lower deck – separated from the larger Business Class cabin by a galley – and features only 2 rows of 12 seats, also arranged in a 2-2-2 layout.
- The upper deck features a third Business Class cabin with 8 rows of 32 seats, arranged in a 2-2 layout. Due to the 2-2 layout (contrary to the 2-2-2 layout on the lower deck), this cabin has a more intimate feel and is the best Business Class cabin. It almost feels a bit like flying in a private plane. The window seats here also have more storage space (with extra bins on the side) compared to the lower deck Business Class seats.

Made to measure.
A 17-metre section of Boeing 747 - cockpit and upper deck - carefully positioned inside a 19-metre long Cheshire barn.
On paper, it just about fits.
In reality?
We had effectively purchased a 7-metre wide x 17-metre long section of aircraft - severed, stripped and scrapped.
Every cable.
Every wire.
Every system.
Cut through with a petrol grinder.
And in this moment, as the doors closed behind her in July 2021, the excitement of planning began to give way to something else…
