Her family stopped using her communication device because her previous speech therapist said “she only uses it to ask for popcorn“. The previous speech therapist then begin using PECS, which turned out to not be very effective, and her communication growth had stalled. This sweet girl and her family came into my life almost 2 years ago and I said “let’s give AAC another try”. I asked her Mom how she felt about popcorn and she said her daughter absolutely loved popcorn. We pulled out her old communication device and sure enough…This child remembered the motor plan to locate and request popcorn on her communication device even though she had not used it for several years. While progress is not super quick with this child, she is absolutely making progress. (And today she even used a two-Word phrase in order to get the snack that she really really wanted. This is what happens when you don’t give up, when you use Multimodal communication, When you coach families as well as other service providers. And when you absolutely believe that a child is being intentional with their communication. #aacforall #aac #multimodalcommunication #speechtherapy

My dyslexia is “severe” but my autism is “mild” and somehow I’m the one with the more advanced technology?? 🤨 Non-speaking autistic people need their apps to COMMUNICATE... 🗣️ how is it fair that the assistive technology I use is advanced enough to sound human… but theirs is stuck in 2007? AAC awareness month feels like the perfect time to call on developers to do better! 💪 #autism #autistic #neurodivergent #severeautism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #aac #speechtherapy #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #specialeducation #therapist #nonverbal

Odin is an adult that is mostly non speaking & lives with autism & cerebral palsy. People often ask how we communicate & understand what Odin wants & needs. We explain that non speaking doesn’t mean he can’t speak, it’s just that verbal speech is not his main form of communication.♥️ Odin can speak verbally, with simple sign language, PECS, & uses an AAC Device, (like in this video) The program he’s using in this video is called CHATTERBOARDS. It allows us to use text to speech & our own pictures to help him ask for daily things like this coffee. We absolutely love when the community takes the time to listen & hear Odin’s voice. He thrives from knowing he’s a valued part of the conversation. Inclusion Matters. Love Always Wins!♥️🤟 #autismacceptance #aac #disabilitypride #odinspiration #lovewins

When you have an autistic child you quickly find out that your wins sometimes don't look the same as everyone elses. My daughter has struggled so much with communication since the beginning of this year, a diagnosis of apraxia and a new stammer meant she had become pretty much mute. No way to communicate. Then add in her social anxiety and it's been a really tough few months that have been so isolating. But last week she had her AAC device. And she's picked it up amazingly. Even her speech and language therapist has said she's never seen someone get it so fast. And it's meant that she's started to communicate again and its pure magic. So yes today I'm celebrating my daughter communicating with a swan because it's our win. It doesn't have to look like anyone elses. She's communicating outside of the house. She's using her AAC effectively. And lets face it animals are often easier to communicate with than some people. So tell me what gets celebrated in your world that most people would think was crazy? #autism #autismo #speechandlanguage #aac #apraxia

If a child needs access to their AAC device for communication then we can’t take it away from them because WE are overstimulated by it. That is their way to use their voice, if they were vocalizing the same word over and over with their voice we wouldn’t be able to take that away. Especially if an accommodation listed in their IEP is that they have unrestricted access to their device. Can it be overwhelming when you’re trying to talk to a different student and hear “PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA” in the background? Absolutely. Instead of taking the device away you could start to work on teaching them what volumes are good for which environments: Outside: AAC on full volume Inside: AAC on medium volume Inside the library: AAC on low volume #aac #aacdevice #cerebralpalsy #autism #downsyndrome

“I need to use the bathroom” is often been used to avoid work both at home and at her vocational program. It’s also used to get out of high sensory situations because bathrooms have significantly less sensory input #autism #sensory #aac

We just got his AAC… and within days, this happened. 🥹 For so long, we’ve been trying to figure out how to help him communicate what he needed. Turns out… it was always there. He just needed the right tools. AAC doesn’t take away his voice. It gives him access to it. 💗 We just started using his AAC from @ablenetinc and it’s been a huge game changer for him. If you’re on the fence — this is your sign. #autismawarenessmonth #aac #communicationmatters #autismparenting #autismjourney

Korzysta z książki PECS i paska zdaniowego. Spokojnie podchodzi do partnera komunikacyjnego i przekazuje informację: „Nie mam czym zjeść. Chcę łyżkę.” Bez napięcia. Bez zachowania trudnego. Chodzi o to, żeby potrafiło samodzielnie komunikować swoje potrzeby w realnych sytuacjach życia codziennego. To właśnie nazywamy komunikacją funkcjonalną. #pecs #aac #autyzm
