Like some scary banana republic, this administration is trampling over our rights by allowing civilians to invade the offices of our (federal) employees and shutting down programs that our representatives in Congress have created and funded. It may feel hopeless, but it isn’t: Thankfully there are organizations fighting for our rights - and winning. LA-based drag queen @laurenbanall has gone viral with performances cosplaying as Erika Kirk, and is now using her virality to fundraise for US civil rights charity the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). In two videos shared over the weekend, Lauren Banall appears dressed in a red blazer and black trousers, with a long blonde wig pulled back and pinned up. She is donning eye-bulging blue contact lenses. Both clips have since gone viral, and at the time of writing have a combined viewership of more than six million. In a third video, Lauren Banall introduced herself in Erika Kirk drag as “Erika Qwerk” and urged her newfound followers to donate to her GoFundMe page, which is raising money to support the ACLU. But Pride has always been more than celebration…it’s resistance. It’s about standing up and standing together. My favorite part of #worldpridedc is the Human Rights Conference. Since WorldPride 2021 in Copenhagen and 2023 in Sydney, 7 countries, including Angola, Bhutan, Botswana, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts & Nevis, Singapore, and Barbados, have all taken huge steps forward by decriminalizing LGBTQ+ people. That’s progress worth celebrating. But we still have a long road ahead, so much more to fight for, especially for our trans and non-binary siblings.
