Our clients, drawn to the prime location and picturesque forest-backed property, purchased an older country club home. However, its existing interior clashed with their preferred minimal, modern, and organic aesthetic. The house felt like a typical suburban home with a “cookie-cutter” style, extensive moldings, and a unremarkable, pre-fabricated white kitchen. The original layout featured a small, cramped kitchen with chopped-up adjacent rooms for a built-in desk/study and a pantry. All of this made the home feel disproportionate to its value and luxurious potential. Our primary goal was to open up the space, creating a grand and functional kitchen that would benefit from enhanced natural light. We integrated all pantry storage into the built-in kitchen cabinets. The design inspiration stemmed from the wife's rich Mexican heritage, specifically the homes in the Los Cabos/Oaxaca region. Emphasizing natural materials from the region, hand-made craftsmanship, and perfectly imperfect finishes was essential. Walls and ceilings were meticulously finished with hand-applied clay plaster, providing a textural, earthy foundation. Cabinetry was crafted from solid, character-grade oak, adding warmth and durability. For the backsplash, we selected handmade, irregular glazed clay tiles, introducing subtle variations. Many fixtures and hardware were chosen in blackened bronze, intended to develop a beautiful, evolving patina, further contributing to the home's organic feel.
