Together, we protect our communities. Together, we rise. The federal administration has launched an unprecedented and aggressive attack on LA and OC - and our immigrant communities are bearing the brunt, including our AAPI communities. Since Friday, we have received multiple reports of widespread raids throughout SOCAL, including neighborhoods like DTLA Garment District, Pasadena, Chinatown, and Koreatown – places where AAPI immigrants live, work, and raise their families. These are not the so-called “violent criminals” the Administration claims to be pursuing. These are our neighbors. Our elders. Our workers, Our families. Now, in an alarming move, the Administration has deployed 4,000 National Guards and 700 marines to our streets. This is not protection. It is provocation. This is not about public safety – it is about silencing dissent. The overwhelming majority of the protesters are law abiding and peaceful. Our VP of Programs stood alongside community partners at LAX on Monday to protest the new Travel Ban. Last Friday afternoon, our CEO was at the DTLA protest with her 12-year-old daughter – because protecting our community is a family value. Like most Los Angelenos, we are simply expressing our views to protect our communities. And for many AAPIs, this fight is deeply personal: Nearly 6 out of 10 AAPIs are immigrants. That means most of us belong to immigrant households. When immigration is under attack, we are under attack. These federal agents are not making us safer. They are sowing fear. And we cannot let that fear divide us. This Chinese-speaking man was abducted in plain sight by unidentified agents. The masks and lack of visible ID is exactly why we need laws that prohibit these types of ‘secret police’ tactics. What is sickening and heartbreaking is the lack of language capabilities by whoever these people were. Where was due process, a civil liberty available to everyone in the United States, regardless of citizenship? While our team tries to find him to offer our legal help in Chinese, we feel the urgent need to flag how lack of language access poses dangers to our limited-English AAPI immigrants who are victims of ice raids, sweeps, detainments and deportation. Across all levels of this anti-immigrant activity, we know that lack of language access means individuals can’t receive fair treatment, urgent medical attention, and basic humane treatment. How can anyone speak up for themselves in a crisis when they are not understood? At AJSOCAL, we stand with immigrants—especially those detained—with legal support in Asian languages, know your rights legal information, and political advocacy. Our work continues as we believe in America’s promise: a place of safety and belonging for all.
