ADI’ve worn hearing aids for high-frequency hearing loss for almost 15 years, but they’ve never really helped me understand speech, especially in noisy situations.
After I was diagnosed with ADHD, I randomly came across an article about auditory processing disorder (APD). It mentioned that a significant percentage of people with ADHD also have auditory processing challenges, and as I read through the symptoms, it felt like I was reading about myself.
An APD assessment along with new hearing aids programmed specifically for my needs has been life-changing for me, and I’ll be starting auditory training soon to see if I can improve how my brain processes sound, especially speech in noisy environments.

NUAuditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting sounds, even though hearing is normal.

THAPD is common among autistic and neurodivergent individuals. It affects how the brain processes sounds rather than hearing itself.
Signs of APD:
🔹 Difficulty Understanding Speech – Struggles with conversations, especially in noisy places, and frequently asks, “What?”
🔹 Trouble with Sound Differentiation – Confuses similar-sounding words and has difficulty pinpointing where sounds come from.
🔹 Issues with Following Directions – Finds multi-step instructions hard to follow.
🔹 Problems with Background Noise – Overwhelmed by noisy environments, even if the sounds are quiet.
🔹 Poor Coordination with Sound – Difficulty syncing movements to auditory cues, like clapping in rhythm.

DRThe theme of a lot of what you can do to support somebody with APD has to do with making sure that the environment is good for listening, you’re willing to repeat yourself, and you try and create an environment where they feel safe to actually ask you for clarification.

CLAuditory processing disorder (APD) is a condition that makes it harder to process sounds and language. You hear words, but it might take your brain a bit longer to understand them. You may also have trouble focusing in environments with lots of background noise. With APD, you have trouble understanding speech even though you don’t have hearing loss. You may also be more of a visual learner.
There are several different types of auditory processing disorders. A few of them include:
Decoding. You hear sounds but your brain can’t process them as words.
Integration. It’s hard to multitask when you’re listening. Taking notes in school is one example.
Organizational. You have trouble recalling information in a specific order.
Prosodic. You have difficulty interpreting tone and inflection. For instance, you might not notice that the tone of a person’s voice scoops up at the end of a question.
Symptoms of auditory processing disorder
Auditory processing disorder symptoms can vary. You might have difficulty:
Following verbal directions
Having long conversations or conversations in loud environments
Reading, spelling and writing
Responding immediately during conversations
Telling the difference between words
Understanding rapid speech
If you have APD, you might have more trouble communicating compared to your peers. Over time, this may lead to mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. It’s important to tell your healthcare provider how you’re feeling so they can help.
