If you step outside tonight, you might hear the long trill of an American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus). This toad occurs across the eastern United States in woodlands, fields, yards, and roadsides. During late winter and spring, they mate in shallow, fish-free pools of water. The females then lay thousands of eggs in a pair of long, spiraling threads. If you’re old enough to know what a telephone cord looks like, the egg masses sort of look like that. ☎️🤣 Turn on your sound to hear their call. Have you been hearing American Toads? 🐸

Wildlife Wednesday🐸 Spring nights come alive with the trill of frogs and toads like this American toad. Males push air from their lungs into a stretchy vocal sac beneath the throat, inflating it like a balloon that acts as a resonating chamber to amplify their call. The same air cycles back and forth between the lungs and vocal sac, letting them trill for long stretches without taking another breath. Healthy wetlands and vernal pools are essential for choruses like this to continue each spring. 🆔: American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) #toad #catawbacollege #wildlifephotography #conservation #explore

An American Toad calling loud from a stream at Beaman Park in Nashville, TN. That steady trill can last up to 30 seconds, echoing through the woods as males try to attract a mate. Amphibians like this rely on clean, unpolluted water to breed and survive. Protecting streams and surrounding habitat keeps spring nights filled with sound. 🐸💧

Good news, everyone! Did you know Spadefoot toads are the undisputed masters of desert survival? Oh my, yes! They spend up to nine months of the year, and sometimes as long as two years, buried deep underground in a profound state of dormancy known as estivation. When above ground, they’re known for their mesmerizing, almost hypnotic cat-like pupils (ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!) and the distinctive hard, sickle-shaped “spade” on each hind foot that makes them expert diggers. Careful, don’t make eye contact! Too late. MUST LEARN MORE TOAD FACTS! NPS video: Young spadefoot toad @petrifiedforestnps

You can always bet on a cane toad when herpetology transects are providing little to nothing! Yes, they’re blood common as muck around here but their little grumpy faces always make me smile. Always a bonus when you find a huge one. Fun fact: females can lay up to 25000 eggs at once!… though it’s estimated only 0.5% of cane toads reach adulthood 😯

Toads in the desert? YES, please🐸 Deep in the heart of Chuckwalla National Monument, we were so fortunate to see a rare occurrence: the emergence of red-spotted toads at a #tinaja or #tenaja. #Anaxyruspunctatus are the only amphibians native to the Monument, and spend much of their lives underground waiting for rain. Following the rains last fall and winter, the toads emerged, laid eggs, hatched tadpoles, and matured into hundreds of tiny toads. The word tinaja means "clay pot" in Spanish. These natural rock formations aren’t fed by springs but catch rainwater, sometimes for just a few weeks at a time. They are crucial resources to wildlife, allowing animals like toads to take full advantage of brief periods of abundance in desert ecosystems. Where there is water, there is life. #Amphibians #Toads 📷 Colin Barrows

Sabs save lives and it’s not just foxes we dedicate our time to helping. Spring is just around the corner and with it comes the migration of toads to their ancestral ponds, where they will hopefully create the next generation of lovely, bumpy amphibians. Like so many native species, toad numbers have declined drastically over recent decades, but wildlife-loving folk up and down the country will be heading out in the evenings to help ensure safe travel for these most wonderful creatures by joining local toad patrols. Many of us will also be joining in and heading out with buckets, torches and high viz jackets to help prevent as many road casualties as we can. Last night one of our team safely transported over 60 toads to safety. Sound up to hear those males chirping! 🐸 #lincolnhuntsaboteurs #toadpatrol #sabssavelives #huntsabs
