ASI’ve been thinking about the title theme “Connections” as I prepare for my upcoming show with @kellycarambula at @the.polka.dot.house that’s opening this Saturday. Navigating the soft corners of new family and friends in Iowa this last year and staying woven into all my beloveds in MPLS. It’s looking a lot like a quilt ever expanding- breathing. Eager to share this new body of work and it was very very special to work on this all as a new mama. CAHi Im Carrie Weldon! I make large scale gestural abstract painting, I guess I’d fall in the outsider-artist category as I haven’t had formal training as a painter, but I’ve invented a lot of cool techniques that I use in my paintings.
🖼️ Most of my paintings are 9sq ft or more and look great in large spaces that are desirous of bold pops of color. I’m moving the top layer of paint by hand as it dries to give it this crunchy texture. MAI begin with raw canvas.
Nothing protected, nothing hidden. Just surface and breath.
Water first.
I let it move freely, like a feeling before it has a name.
It spreads under my hand, unpredictable, alive.
Then paint.
Acrylic pigments sinking into raw cotton, staining rather than sitting on top.
There is no full control here — only listening.
I follow the motion.
With my hands, with a brush, sometimes with whatever is near me — even a plant, dragging thin lines like quiet thoughts crossing a restless mind.
Each layer is a response.
Each mark is a reaction, not a plan.
I don’t paint images.
I paint states.
Pressure, softness, tension, release.
The way emotions expand, dissolve, collide.
Working on unprimed canvas means nothing can be taken back.
The surface absorbs everything.
Like memory. Like the body.

GUI work with acrylics because I can’t wait for oils to dry. When I paint the piece has between 5 to 10 layers and you can’t see those immediately but look closer and the texture is there and the more texture beneath, the more alive the painting feels to me and the more it tells.

MAThe sound of the brush on silk does something to my brain. The entire process so far has been incredibly meditative. Silk isn’t as forgiving as canvas because it can’t take as much paint if you “mess up.” So, I really have to trust my instincts and go with the flow.
