Save it for later . Basic Medicines You Should Keep at Home A small home medicine kit can help manage common everyday health problems until proper medical care is available. Knowing the right medicines and their basic uses can make early management easier. Here are some commonly used basic medicines: • Fever (Pyrexia) Paracetamol helps reduce fever and relieve mild pain. Ibuprofen may help if fever is associated with body aches. • Headache / Migraine Paracetamol for mild headache. NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen for moderate pain. Sumatriptan is used in migraine attacks. • Cough Dextromethorphan helps control dry cough. Ambroxol, Guaifenesin, and Bromhexine help loosen mucus in wet cough. • Diarrhea (Acute Gastroenteritis) ORS helps prevent dehydration. Probiotics support restoration of gut flora. Rifaximin may be used in bacterial diarrhea under medical guidance. • Constipation Isabgol helps in mild constipation by increasing fiber. Lactulose syrup softens stools in chronic constipation. Bisacodyl may be used in severe cases. • Acidity / GERD / Gastritis Pantoprazole or Omeprazole reduce stomach acid production. Sucralfate protects the stomach lining. Antacids give quick relief from acidity. • Hypertension (Mild to Moderate) Amlodipine is commonly used as a first-line calcium channel blocker. Telmisartan is an ARB option for blood pressure control. Hydrochlorothiazide may be used as an add-on diuretic. • Type 2 Diabetes (Newly Diagnosed) Metformin is the most common first-line medicine. Glimepiride may be added when blood sugar control is not adequate. ⚠️ Disclaimer: This content is for educational awareness only. Most people panic about testing… and spend way more money than they needed to. After another busy urgent care shift, I realized something: Many patients don’t actually lack access to healthcare. They lack clarity. Here’s what most people get wrong: When symptoms hit—cough, fever, sore throat, respiratory illness—people jump straight to the most expensive option because they assume more expensive = better care. Not always. Let me break it down simply. Option 1: Lowest cost — Grocery store tests Many grocery stores sell rapid tests for common respiratory illnesses. If you just want a quick answer and your symptoms are mild, this can be the most affordable starting point. Option 2: Mid-range — Pharmacy testing Pharmacies can often test and treat common infections. This is a great middle ground between home testing and urgent care. Option 3: Full evaluation — Urgent care If symptoms are worsening, confusing, or concerning, urgent care provides a full clinical evaluation. This is where we assess things like viral vs bacterial infection, emergency symptoms, and whether antibiotics are actually appropriate. Read that again. The goal isn’t just testing. The goal is making the right medical decision for the situation. In medicine, I see this every day: Confusion about terms like “viral infection,” “monitor symptoms,” or “antibiotics aren’t needed” leads people to panic, overspend, or delay care when it actually matters. That’s why healthcare literacy matters. Understanding your options helps you know: • when to monitor symptoms • when a pharmacy can help • when urgent care is appropriate • when to see a doctor immediately Good medicine isn’t just treatment. It’s patient education and clarity. Save this so the next time symptoms show up, you know your options before the panic starts. And share this with someone who always rushes straight to the ER. If this helped bring clarity, comment “CLARITY.” I’ll keep sharing more real doctor advice from the urgent care shift.
