REAcid house in a swimming pool anyone?
Captured live at Victoria Baths in 1988, A Guy Called Gerald appears as UK acid house was still forming. Gerald Simpson took clear influence from Chicago records and reshaped them through a Manchester lens, helping define an early UK approach to the sound.
Recorded in a single weekend for around £75, "Voodoo Ray" went on to become one of the most influential acid house releases made in Britain, circulating widely before the genre entered the mainstream.
More than three decades on, it remains a key reference point in the early history of UK
dance music.

Artists like charanjit singh don’t just play music; they rewire my neutral pathways, triggers pure euphoria, floods me with dopamine and reminds me of my element. They don’t numb reality; they expand it. Without it i’d be lost in silence. The repetition feels like mantra in music and i love the ability to understand it.

MU“I knew I wanted to use the Roland TB-303 for the bassline. It was a new thing at that point. I discovered it in Sound On Sound magazine, so I’d heard of it before, and then I saw one in a shop on Denmark Street. It was quite cheap at the time – I think it was £150. It had just arrived. There was no acid house back then, this was 1982, then acid house started and adopted the 303. But I was just experimenting a lot then. Released in 1982, Orange Juice’s Rip It Up quietly made history: the first chart hit built on a TB-303, four years before Phuture, Trax Records, or the Second Summer of Love pushed it into the wild squelch Chicago made famous.
The band used the 303 for melody instead of chaos—accidentally creating the UK’s pre-acid acid hit. The same machine, two totally different futures.

There’s definitely something to the @rolandglobal 303 and how it’s shapes the wave forms and how those sounds interact with my ear and my brain. This genre didn’t dawn the name acid for no reason. The envelopes are tighter, the sounds are sharper, the attack it shorter and everything at this Bpm is snappier. I may not have the terminology correct but I know what I hear and I know what I feel and I like it.
