ELA shelter dog and cat who arrived the same day developed a bond so deep they would reach their paws through kennel bars to touch each other, and every time the dog was adopted without the cat he stopped eating until staff reunited them — happening three times before anyone understood what was really going on.
Once staff recognized them as a bonded rescue pair, they posted their story online with one condition — these two only leave together — and waited four more months before the right person came along.
A woman grieving the loss of her husband saw their story and said her empty house needed two souls, not one.
The day she brought them home they curled up together and slept for twelve straight hours, and she said saving them turned out to save her just as much.

ERMummy is known for her loyalty to a few of the staff members @bordertailsrescue and that’s what so many of them love about her…

ELA 13-year-old dog spent 18 months at an overcrowded shelter with no one willing to adopt him, until the morning staff scheduled him for euthanasia and a package arrived with just 13 minutes to spare.
Inside was a handmade blanket, his old collar, and a heartbreaking letter from a deployed soldier who had just discovered his ex-wife surrendered his dog without telling him. 🥺
The soldier begged the shelter to keep him alive until he returned home six weeks later — and they did.
When the soldier finally walked through those doors, his dog knew him the moment he stepped inside. 🥲🐾❤️

FOA few days ago we dropped the dog we found off at the @hawaiianhumane to start the adoption process. This is to ensure that no one can try to take her from us once we adopt her. While she was unchipped, for 48 hours someone could have still claimed her as their dog if they could provide proof. It’s been more than 48 hours, so that window is closed.
We are not allowed to get updates, but if she’s still there it means that she is being put through an adoption eligibility period. They are monitoring her behavior and health to make sure she can be put up for adoption. We chose their Opt-to-Adopt program meaning they will give her back to us should she be adoptable.
She is a very good good, so I’m not worried at all about her behavior. As for health, was a stray with sightings as early as September 2025. During that time, I’m not sure what happened to her. She has a rash on their inner thighs that itched, but nothing else obvious.
Right now, all we can do is put faith in the system and that we are doing the right thing.

Onyx will be euthanized in 72 hours if a foster and rescue are not secured (not available for public adoption)
Onyx is a 2 year old female German Shepherd (possibly Belgian Malinois mix) who arrived at the shelter on 1/2/2026 after being surrendered for escaping from the yard. Shs a product of irresponsible ownership …the owner did not fix their dogs, they had puppies and now Onyx is one of the ones who ended up left behind in the shelter system.
Right now Onyx is shut down and scared. She allows petting, but she trembles and tries to keep distance from people. On leash she panics, flails, and eventually just shuts down completely. She isn’t aggressive by any means she’s overwhelmed and doesn’t understand what’s happening to her. She has been tolerant of other dogs but keeps to herself and doesn’t know how to play right now.
From the owner intake:
• Lived mostly outdoors (about 80% outside)
• Was around dogs and reported as not aggressive
• High energy
• Knows basic cues like sit and wait
• Has escape history (digging, jumping, climbing)
Onyx needs slow introductions, confidence building, and continued socialization. She needs someone patient enough to show her that the world isn’t something to be afraid of. She is so young. She deserved better than this 😔

SH***ADOPTED!!!*** Bon Bon was scheduled to meet a family tonight. She was on their list…but their hearts were set on another dog. And that’s okay. But here’s something we’ve learned over the years: the right dog isn’t always the one you planned on. Sometimes the real match, the one that fits your lifestyle, your energy, your heart, is the one you almost overlooked. Rescue has a beautiful way of surprising us like that.
It’s easy to miss the quiet souls right in front of you. Size, breed, and age absolutely matter, but sometimes the dog who changes your life isn’t the one you originally clicked on. Our message is simple: come with an open mind. Plan to meet at least three dogs. Even the one who may not be your “first pick”.
And with that in mind, we highly recommend meeting Bon Bon. She is beautifully well-adjusted, wonderful with other dogs, gentle with kids, and respectful of our shelter cats. She’s smart, sensitive, and truly a doll. At almost four months old and expected to be around 60 lbs full grown, she’s ready to learn and ready to bond deeply with her people.
Knowing her mama, who we sadly lost due to human neglect, we see that same tender, loving spirit shining through in Bon Bon. She loves her cuddles. She loves her people. She just wants to find her home.
