ROOn April 5, 2002, the world lost Layne Staley. Years before that, in one of his most heartbreaking interviews, he was asked a simple question: “Are you happy?” His response was classic Layne, sarcastic, funny, but painfully revealing underneath it all.
By the late 90s, Alice in Chains had already become one of the defining bands of the grunge era, with albums like Dirt and Jar of Flies selling millions and shaping an entire generation of heavy music. But behind all of that success, Layne was struggling in ways most people could see, but nobody could really stop. He died on April 5, 2002, at just 34 years old. His body wasn’t found until April 19, but April 5 is considered the official date of his death.
Moments like these are kinda hard to watch now, because you can hear the sadness overtones hiding behind the sarcastic, loving nature.
