WRHERE’S what you need to know about NANOWRIMO👇🏼
NANOWRIMO stands for National Novel Writing Month, and it’s traditionally held in November.
Many new and experienced writers use it as an opportunity to write a novel, or at least 50k of it.
Here’s the problem👇🏼
What happens if you don’t make it to 50k?
What happens if you only write 10k words, or don’t write every day during that month? Did you fail?
To me, there is a right way and a wrong way to go into NANOWRIMO. 💡
Here’s the right way:
NANOWRIMO is a great program. It gives you a deadline. It helps writers get their words on the page without overthinking it, and that’s crucial for a first draft. 📔
Writers expecting to write a substantial portion, if not all, of a first draft of their novel will find success with NANOWRIMO.
Here’s the wrong way:
What I don’t like to see is new writers jumping into NANOWRIMO with the unrealistic expectation that, the by end of the month, they will have a full, polished “ready-to-publish” novel.
That’s not going to happen.
Here’s why:
Editing takes time. Research takes time. And writing, no matter how fast, takes time.💡
November is also a busy month for many, whether it be from school or work schedules.
It’s unfair to YOU to believe that a publishable book is baked in less than a month.
What you can create, however, is a FIRST DRAFT.
And first drafts are valuable.🌳
Without one, you can’t edit, you can’t tweak, you can’t rewrite—and you can’t publish your book.
Going into NANOWRIMO with the mindset of creating a draft, not a perfect novel, will set you up for success! 👏
With this mindset, you’re more likely to hit that 50k word count goal and feel confident about your work.
So enjoy the drafting process, push yourself to get your story on the page, and be kind to yourself no matter what this November. 🤍
