Three things will decide whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity actually become buying platforms: 1️⃣ Customer experience wins People adopt easier workflows, not cooler technology. 2️⃣ Brand control matters On Amazon, brands control listings, pricing, ads, and reviews. With AI assistants? Brands barely control how they’re represented. 3️⃣ Data decides the winner Amazon has purchase history, delivery data, pricing, and verified reviews. That’s powerful. My personal take? I’m not rushing to buy inside ChatGPT. If I trust a brand, I’d rather buy direct from them. Amazon becomes the backup when: • I don’t have a trusted brand yet • or I need something quickly Living in the mountains, sometimes fast shipping wins. Amazon is literally a honey badger in ecommerce! Should it surprise anyone that they are taking the same approach to AI commerce and building walls around their platform to stop ACP and UCP? It actually makes sense when you think about it. Discovery in general AI models is huge, but their transaction volume is tiny and Amazon has done an amazing job of training customers to discover anywhere they like, but they still come to Amazon to buy. Amazon better serves their customer by building its own AI solutions and blocking out the rest. If ACP and/or UCP are successful and scale then it puts a barrier between the customer and Amazon and that is not good for Amazon. What is perhaps more impressive than Amazon having a 40% market share of online transactions is the fact that their nearest and fastest growing competitor Walmart only has about 7%. Two main takeaways here: 1. In an ideal world your brand is EVERYWHERE! 2. Be obsessed with customer data and delivering value to your consumer. I’ll add a bonus that I didn’t talk about - The majority of overall transactions, 80% or so, still happen in physical stores. The reason Walmart is obsessed about growing their digital presence is because they realize how important it is two have a unified approach. ONLINE ECOMMERCE CONVERSION FOCUSED ADVERTISING DRIVES PHYSICAL STORE SALES. Stop obsessing over impressions and reach.
