This video of the SignAloud gloves (often attributed to MIT students because of the prize they won) is a masterclass in solving a “Human Friction” problem. The 99% see a “cool gadget.” The 1% see the elimination of a communication barrier for 70 million people. Created by Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi (winners of the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize), these gloves don’t just track movement; they translate the complex, nuanced gestures of American Sign Language (ASL) into spoken English in real-time. The end of the language barrier is being coded right now. 🦾🗣️ While the world is distracted by AI chatbots that write poetry, these builders used AI to give a voice to the silent. By using a network of sensors and “Statistical Regression” (similar to a neural network), the system maps hand positions to words instantly. The Signal: • Real-Time Latency: Near-instant translation from gesture to speech. • Ergonomic Design: Built to be worn like a hearing aid or contact lenses—not a bulky computer. • Neural Mapping: Deciphers X, Y, and Z coordinates of every finger move. • The Mission: Proving that communication isn’t a privilege—it’s a fundamental human right. The tools changed. The goal is the same: Building a world where everyone can be heard. Mega Prompts link in bio Follow @foundx.ai for the daily signal. #Foundx #SignLanguage #AI2026 #SiliconValley

This video features Justina Miles, the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter who captured the world’s attention during Rihanna’s 2023 Super Bowl halftime show. With the text overlay "The sign language interpreter was not messing around," the clip highlights her high-energy, expressive performance that goes far beyond simple translation. Miles perfectly syncs her rhythmic movements and intense facial expressions with the beat of the song, essentially "performing" the music for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Her performance went viral because it redefined what accessibility looks like on a global stage, proving that music is a felt experience that transcends sound. By channeling Rihanna’s swagger and the song’s aggressive energy into her signs, Miles ensured that the ASL broadcast was just as entertaining and impactful as the main stage event. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of passionate, skilled interpretation in making massive cultural moments truly inclusive for everyone.

Weekly ASL lessons coming in clutch! 🤭 I’ve loved learning American Sign Language over the past 5 years… I’ve been able to use it in my HIIT and strength sessions, to communicate with my baby aaaaand its keeping my brain healthy because it’s a challenging skill to learn (talking and signing is tough)! But the BEST reward is getting messages from people who find it helpful in my HIIT and Strength sessions! Anyone else want to learn ASL? I definitely want to pick up some BSL (British Sign Language) too! And yes- they’re different!

The "Sign Language" we know today is not a universal set of gestures, but a complex family of independent languages with their own unique histories and grammars. American Sign Language (ASL), for example, isn't actually based on English; it’s a descendant of Old French Sign Language, brought to the U.S. in 1817 by Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. This is why a person using ASL can often understand a person from France better than they can a person using British Sign Language (BSL). Follow @insidehistoryHub for more For centuries, the Deaf community fought "Oralism"—the forced teaching of lip-reading and speech over signing—which many saw as a form of cultural erasure. The "Deaf President Now" movement at Gallaudet University in 1988 was a historic turning point, proving that sign language was a legitimate linguistic and cultural identity. Today, neuroscientists have discovered that the brain processes sign language in the same "language centers" used for speech, debunking the myth that it is merely "miming." Sign language has since moved from the "fringes" of society to the center of pop culture, with viral "Sign Language Interpreters" at concerts and Oscar-winning films like "CODA." It represents one of the most successful civil rights struggles in modern history—the fight to prove that communication is not about sound, but about the human need to be understood. As technology advances, sign language remains the ultimate "analog" tool for connection, bridging the gap between worlds through the simple power of a hand shape. #history #signlanguage #asl #deafculture #communication linguistics

Two students from the University of Washington, Navid Azodi and Thomas Pryor, created gloves that can turn American Sign Language (ASL) into speech and text. Their invention, called “SignAloud,” won the 2016 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize. The SignAloud gloves use sensors to track the wearer’s hand movements and gestures. This information is sent via Bluetooth to a computer, which converts the gestures into spoken words and text instantly. Follow us (👉@ai.innovationshub) for everything latest from the AI world. Two Birds- SEE and ASL comparison-no side is “better”, I make these to show the differences between the two so that you’re aware of what you’re actually using/ learning (if you’re self taught). The deaf community uses both, but ASL is encouraged as it is its own language and has a separate grammatical structure that is different from English. SEE- Signed Exact English- I’m using the signed equivalent of each word, and not changing any signs to fit context. ASL- American Sign Language- is its own official language, unlike SEE, and has a different grammatical structure. I sign the lyrical meaning behind the lines and change signs to fit the context. The most beautiful language🤍🫶🏻 sign language isn't universal 😊. Different countries have their own sign languages, like American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), and Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO). Each has its own grammar, vocab, and cultural nuances. I started learning BISINDO last year, and for the past 3 month, I started learning ASL and Русский Жестовый Язык (РЖЯ)- Russian sign language. As for why it's needed, sign language is a vital tool for communication in Deaf communities worldwide. It provides a way for people who are deaf or hard of hearing to express themselves, connect with others, and access info. As a medstudent who will become a doctor someday, my patients can be anyone, from everywhere, with any kind of background. So? It’s important for me to know their language as well) #signlanguage #polyglot

🤟 Ella shares how she prepares to sing & sign songs. We posted parts 1 and 2 a bit ago (scroll back through her feed) where she sings the song while signing it. She works with her amazing teacher @learn_asl_with_michelle to create the gloss, which is the guide sheet containing Ella’s notes for her chosen signs. Once Ella learns the signs for the song, she doesn’t need to look at the notes anymore. But she always has them for reference. Ella is hearing and studies American Sign Language as her chosen second language. Aside from being able to connect with the deaf community and open so much more communication, it has come in quite handy for Ella and Mom to use when Ella is on set filming, and in many other life situations where we cannot always speak. 🎶 She has another beautiful song teed up.
