FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary says the agency is pushing companies to move away from animal testing. “Today the FDA is putting out new guidance to get away from animal testing and encourage companies to use newer technologies.” “Organ-on-a-chip technology and computational modeling… can often be better, cheaper, safer, and more humane.” “We’re committed to reducing unnecessary animal testing.” “90% of drugs that pass on animal testing do not pass in human testing when it comes to safety and efficacy.” “We’re using newer technologies that are better for animals, but more importantly, they’re better for people.”

Many people assume they have to choose. But in reality, the people working in biomedical research care deeply about animals and dedicate their careers to both animal welfare and improving health outcomes. It’s not either/or. #ScienceAndEthics #BiomedicalResearch #PublicHealth

The FDA is making a historic leap toward a more ethical and scientifically advanced future. By releasing new draft guidance in March 2026, the agency is officially providing a roadmap for drug developers to swap traditional animal testing for New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). This shift moves the industry away from default animal models which often fail to predict human reactions and toward high-tech alternatives like organ on a chip, 3D organoids, and AI-driven modeling. With the backing of the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, this transition aims to speed up drug approvals, reduce costs, and, most importantly, spare millions of animals from laboratory testing. #EndAnimalTesting #FDAModernization #CrueltyFreeScience #HumanRelevantResearch

Learning about lab animal medicine honestly left me shocked in the best and most complicated way. In drug studies with mice and rats, researchers can surgically place vascular access ports by isolating a vein and feeding a catheter toward the heart so blood samples can be collected without repeated tail sticks. It sounds intense, and it is, but the goal is actually to reduce stress and improve welfare while accurately measuring drug levels over time. That balance between advancing medicine and protecting animal welfare is a real ethical tension that people outside the field rarely see. It feels like a double-edged sword because these animals contribute to breakthroughs that benefit humans and other animals, yet their care must remain a top priority. Welfare protocols, oversight, and refinement techniques exist specifically to minimize harm and improve living conditions. Being in vet med and seeing this up close makes you think deeply about responsibility. I genuinely want to hear perspectives from people inside and outside the profession on this. If this sparked a thought, drop it in the comments and let’s talk. Like and follow for more conversations at the intersection of vet med, ethics, and research.
