BOThis is about the time of year when bears are out in the community eating ALL of the things to prepare for winter.
Most Colorado bears are active from mid-March through early November. In the fall, bears enter a period of compulsive overeating and start feeding for 22 hours a day to gain the 20,000 calories a day they need to survive hibernation. With a nose thatās 100 times more sensitive than ours, a bear can smell food five miles away.
Bears will work hard to get the calories they need, and can easily damage property, vehicles and homes. Bears are very smart and have great memories ā once they find food near homes, campgrounds, vehicles or communities, theyāll come back for more. It is therefore imperative to secure trash cans until collection.
Fruit trees attract bears, so frequent harvesting and cleaning fallen fruit can reduce the bear activity. You can learn more about this at https://www.fruitrescue.org/
Boulder Police Animal Protection officers work closely with Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers to ensure bear and human safety. When Animal Protection officers receive a bear call, they typically respond in person to ensure the bears are healthy and not being threatened or threatening.
Sometimes an in-person response is not warranted, such as:
ā¢ if there is a delay in notifying us and the current location is unknown,
ā¢ a sighting of a bear walking across a street/down an alley,
ā¢ a bear sleeping in a tree etc.
Basically bears doing bear things. Each sighting is, however, still documented for CPW. When Animal Protection officers do respond to a bear call, they determine whether the bear appears healthy and not injured. They will ensure the bear is in or can be ushered to a safe place, like up a tree. If there appears to be trash disturbed by bears, code enforcement will issue fines (specifically for trash and compost unsecured west of Broadway).
