Only Yesterday (1991) โ This Studio Ghibli classic was a surprise box office smash, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film of its year. Unlike most anime at the time, the creators recorded the dialogue first and then animated the charactersโ faces to match, resulting in much more realistic facial muscles and expressions.
The production was incredibly detail-oriented; the color department spent an entire year searching for the perfect shade of red to accurately depict the saffron flowers shown in the film. Director Isao Takahata was so dedicated to realism that he insisted on capturing the exact look of the Japanese countryside from the 1960s.
