The Artemis II crew didn't just break Apollo 13's 56-year distance record today. They're beaming back 4K crystal-clear video of the Moon's surface using revolutionary laser technology from MIT. For the first time in human history, we're seeing the Moon's mysterious far side in stunning detail—craters so sharp you can almost feel them. [^0^] "It's like we're a bunch of little kids up here," said Commander Reid Wiseman. "We cannot get enough of this. What is your thought on this!? #Artemis #ArtemisII #NASA #MoonFlyby #DeepSpace SpaceInsight LunarSurface MoonMission

As the Artemis II crew prepares to circle the moon today, they received a pep talk this morning from another legendary astronaut. Flight controllers in Houston beamed up a pre-recorded message from Jim Lovell, who commanded the Apollo 13 mission and orbited the moon with Apollo 8. Jim recorded the message for the astronauts before he passed away last August at age 97. Volume up!! 🔈

🌍 EARTH VIEW FROM DIFFERENT DECADES In 1970, during Apollo 13, humanity saw Earth from space in a way that changed perspective forever. By 2026, Artemis II continues that legacy with more advanced technology and clearer views of our planet. This comparison highlights how far space exploration and imaging technology have evolved over time—offering sharper, more detailed visuals of Earth and deepening our understanding of the planet we call home. #Space #Science #Earth #NASA #Education

NASA said the crew used handheld cameras to capture high-resolution photos and video of the lunar surface, including features humans had never directly seen before, with astronauts also becoming the first people in generations to fly around the Moon. During the flyby, Orion came within about 4,067 miles of the Moon, giving the crew a rare window to document impact craters, ancient lava flows, cracks, ridges, and subtle changes in color, brightness, and texture that can help scientists better understand the Moon’s makeup and history. NASA also released live views of an Earthrise as the spacecraft emerged from behind the Moon. Artemis II also set a new record for the farthest distance humans have ever traveled from Earth, reaching roughly 252,756 miles and surpassing Apollo 13.
