Apollo 8—Christmas Eve, 1968. The first humans to orbit the moon. While the whole world watched, the crew—Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders—sent this message back to Earth: They read from the Book of Genesis: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light…” As they read the creation story while orbiting the moon, it reminded the world—amid Cold War chaos and a violent year in history—that there’s something bigger than us. A Creator. A purpose. A reminder of how small we are, yet how loved we must be to exist in all this. And they closed with: “And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas—and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.” Gives you chills. #apollo8 #genesis

December 24, 1968. The crew of Apollo 8 take turns reading from the Book of Genesis of the King James Bible to an unprecedented audience of roughly one billion people, a quarter of the world population at the time. Apollo 8 was the first manned mission to orbit the moon. The astronauts were in moon orbit during Christmas Eve, and they were instructed by NASA earlier to “do something appropriate” for a Christmas Eve message that would be broadcast all around the world. As Apollo 8 CMP Jim Lovell later explained, they chose the Book of Genesis because “the first ten verses of Genesis is the foundation of many of the world’s religions, not just the Christian religion”. LMP Bill Anders started the broadcast off by reading verses 1-4, followed by Lovell reading 5-8 and Commander Frank Borman reading 9-10. Finally, Borman finished the broadcast by wishing everyone on Earth a Merry Christmas and God’s blessings. The beautiful message carried through to more than 60 countries around the world, serving as a moment of global unity in a trying time. Merry Christmas to everyone on the good Earth! 🌎 Ad Astra Per Aspera 💫 📸: NASA Public Domain. Each photograph of Earth or the moon seen in this video was taken during the Apollo 8 mission. The audio in this video is a slightly shortened version of the original audio broadcast from the Apollo 8 capsule to Earth on December 24, 1968. The original audio was 2 minutes long, so to allow for the video to fit into the 90 second time frame that Instagram allows I had to delete certain moments of silence in the broadcast.
