Viggo Mortensen was a last-minute replacement for the role of Aragorn after the original actor was deemed too young, and he famously performed his own stunts with such intensity that he broke two toes while kicking an Orc helmet and had a tooth knocked out during a fight scene—insisting on supergluing the tooth back in so he could finish the day’s filming without a delay. The production was a massive undertaking in New Zealand that required over 1,600 pairs of prosthetic Hobbit feet and ears, and the cast became so close during the grueling 438-day shoot that eight of the nine members of the Fellowship (including Sean Astin and Dominic Monaghan) got matching tattoos of the Elvish word for “nine,” while John Rhys-Davies opted out and sent his stunt double to get the ink instead. In 2026, the franchise remains highly active with the upcoming live-action film The Hunt for Gollum (2027), which sees Andy Serkis returning to both direct and star as the titular creature alongside a returning Ian McKellen as Gandalf; additionally, the 2024 anime The War of the Rohirrim features Brian Cox and Gaia Wise, continuing the series’ legacy through a fresh visual style led by director Kenji Kamiyama.
