Well, if you didn’t know this already, these are NOT good trees!! They were first introduced as the Bradford pear being sterile, not producing any viable seeds… but then there was another variety introduced this enabled, cross, pollination, and viable seeds. They have been taking over for a few decades now on vacant lands and in forgotten flower beds. They grow quickly and have thorns which make them hard to manage. Please consider removing any on your property!! For more information on this and also a link for a buyback event (cut your tree take a photo, get a replacement) with the Missouri invasive plant council & Missouri Community Forestry Council, Magnificent Missouri, Forrest Keeling Nursery, Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, the Missouri Prairie Foundation, and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) check out: https://moinvasives.org/pear-buyback/

The best way to prune a bradford pear is about an inch above the ground, then lather on a good amount of herbicide to kill that rootstock. Then plant a Mexican Plum in its place. Many folks will say to graft a fruiting pear on top, which aint the answer. Fruiting pears will never be able to grow at the rate of the rootstock, so you will be pained with sprout suckers constantly trying to outcompete the scion. #bradfordpear #invasiveplant

Bradford pears were introduced to the U.S. in the 1960s as a “sterile” ornamental. Fast growing, symmetrical, covered in white blooms every spring and cities and developers planted them everywhere. The problem? They weren’t sterile. Different cultivars cross-pollinated, escaped cultivation, and now they’re one of the most invasive trees across the South and Midwest. They split in storms. They smell terrible in bloom. They outcompete native species. They form dense thickets in pastures and woodlines. The bigger issues - they don’t really give anything back. Very little wildlife value compared to native species. No meaningful food production for your family. Weak wood. Short lifespan. They’re a perfect example of landscaping built for appearance instead of function. If you’re planting a tree, make it count. Plant edible trees like apples, pears, peaches, persimmons, and pawpaw. Feed your family. Increase your resilience. Plant native trees like oaks, hickories, serviceberries, redbuds. Support pollinators. Support birds. Strengthen your regional ecosystem. Plant something that builds soil, creates shade intentionally, and produces long-term value. Value that can extend beyond our own lifespans.

Bradford pear trees were once one of the most popular ornamental trees in the U.S. They were introduced from East Asia in the early 1900s as part of agricultural research. Scientists were studying them for their resistance to fire blight and later began promoting them as ornamental landscape trees. In 1963, the Bradford pear variety was released commercially, and it quickly became a favorite for suburban yards because of its fast growth and beautiful white spring blooms. For years, they were planted all over neighborhoods, shopping centers, and new developments across the country. But over time, we learned something important. In Tennessee, Bradford pear trees have become a serious invasive species. They cross-pollinate with other Callery pear varieties and spread aggressively into roadsides, fields, and forests. Instead of staying contained in landscaped areas, they form dense thickets that crowd out native plants and disrupt local ecosystems. They also have a major structural problem. Bradford pears grow with very tight branch angles, which makes them extremely prone to splitting during storms. Many homeowners discover this the hard way when large sections of the tree break apart after heavy wind, rain, or ice. They spread aggressively, crowd out native plants, and their weak branch structure makes them notorious for splitting during storms. If you have one in your yard, replacing it with a native tree like dogwood, redbud, or serviceberry is a much better option for your landscape and the local ecosystem. Native trees support local wildlife, provide better habitat for birds and pollinators, and are naturally better suited for East Tennessee landscapes. Sometimes removing a problematic tree is also the perfect opportunity to rethink your yard and design something even better in its place. #KnoxvilleTN #EastTennessee #NativePlants #BradfordPears #LandscapeDesign

Callery pears 🤔🤢🤮 These nasty invasive pear trees, once touted for their rapid growth and abundant white blossoms, are now at the top of horticultural hit lists everywhere. Callery pears (Pyrus calleryana) are an invasive species, including cultivars like ‘Bradford’, ‘Cleveland’, ‘Chanticleer’, ‘Aristocrat’, and more. Due to their rapid growth they are very weak trees, making them quite hazardous in severe weather. They have abundant and precocious seeds, enabling them to establish weedy populations quickly. And their blossoms reek something fierce, with many comparing the foul scent to fish or cat urine. The good news is that if you have one, you can cut it down! We strongly recommend removing it and replacing it with a native tree, which you may be able to get for free through one of the Arbor Day tree giveaways starting soon around St. Louis! Here are a few places with tree giveaways starting soon: - Kemper Center for Home Gardening - @bellefontainecemetery - @forestreleaf - @moconservation (registration required) For more information on these trees and how to get rid of them, check out the link in our bio! #invasive #plants #nativeplants #spring missouribotanicalgarden

The Bradford Pear & Callery Pear are known as invasive, and in some states have been banned. The only invasive plant in my mind is Kudzu; other than that, invasive is just another way of saying grows really well. So why not use what is already growing all around us and make it productive? You will have to keep up with the suckers but overgrafting these “trees that grow like weeds”-S. Sobkowiak is a great way to turn a nuisance into a food production system that’s probably growing right in your yard or along a hedge row near you.

They look great, but they smell awful. Bradford Pears are actually considered an invasive species. They cross-pollinate, spreading rapidly into wild areas, outcompeting native trees, and forming dense thickets. They cannot be planted in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. They might look nice with the blooms, but the horrible smell they emit means they have to go. Let know in the comments if you have seen or smelled these trees before.
