Assent-based therapy doesn’t mean we avoid difficult work. It’s doesn’t mean play and stimming away ALL session long (a trendy topic for another day).
Instead, it means we keep a pulse on a child’s willing participation through those challenges and an eye out for signs that indicate we are doing too much too fast. Therapy will have difficult moments, that’s where growth happens. But when you empower learners with a sense of control, we shift from therapy that we do TO them, to therapy that we do WITH them 🤝🏼

HAAssent means your learner is willingly participating through words, body language, or behavior because they feel safe, respected, and engaged.
It is not the same as consent, which usually comes from a parent or guardian, but it is equally important! We look for signs like leaning in, smiling, participating, and responding with interest, etc. We ALSO watch for withdrawal, resistance, or distress, which can signal that assent is withdrawn.
Honoring assent builds trust, increases motivation, and respects the learner’s autonomy. A therapy session without assent can not only be ineffective, it can be harmful. Our goal is collaboration, never compliance.

ROObviously if the person or someone else is in danger (running into the street, going to touch something hot/sharp, etc), you have to put your hands on them.
However if it’s to ‘follow through on a demand,’ there are better ways. I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it. Not gaining assent and honoring assent withdrawals lead to our clients having a higher chance of being abused.
Imagine your entire life someone is always forcing you to do things, moving your hands for you, not listening when your whole body is saying, “NO!”

NEPeople are often confused about how an animal could assent without the ability to say the words “yes” or “no.” Communication is not only words. In this interaction, I’m showing a two-week-old foal that orienting to me can solicit my interaction, whereas moving away from me will get me to put my hand down. It’s an easy and clear way that I can empower this animal, rapidly teach a foundation skill, and build trust. If you try this with animals you meet, send me a message and let me know how it goes!
*A safety note: when meeting a new dog, holding out our hands for smelling is not automatically a safe practice with all dogs. It’s best to ignore strange dogs unless you know the dog and their guardian want to interact with you. Even for a dog that very obviously wants to interact with me, I will still implement an assent based protocol like this. I don’t assume they like to be touched in the way I may automatically do it. Most people touch dog’s heads and most dogs don’t love that. I stop touching certain body parts if they display behavior indicating they don’t like it.
