JAAustralia has the best spiders!
The Sydney funnel web is widely regarded as one of the deadliest spiders on earth and it’s no secret as to why. These medium sized Mygalomorphs possess a powerful and potent venom with specific properties that wreak havoc on primates in particular; yes that means us! While no one has died since antivenom was developed some 50+ years ago, an untreated Sydney funnel web bite is no joke! In the wild these spiders spend their entire lives in the safety of their funnel shaped webs under rocks and logs, hunting for food within them. Once males mature they wander out in search of females and are more frequently encountered out and about. I will be returning to Australia this November hopefully to find these spiders again, and perhaps encountering a species that could dethrone these as the deadliest spiders in Australia.
