It may seem like a small thing but if you think about what it means to have a speaking child who can use words to share an array of emotions… contrast that with a kid who is feeling all the things but lacks the ability to use spoken language. What joy that he can tell us exactly what he finds yummy- not just eating to eat, but letting us know he finds this croissant particularly yummy. I’m not going to lie, when we were introduced to AAC devices we didn’t get it. Let me simplify this- it’s most often just an iPad with software on it. There are different apps- we’re currently using #Proloquo2Go The first few months were frustrating- how was this going to help us, why was it so complicated, wouldn’t this make him dependent and less prone to speaking?? But I’ll admit I was wrong. Little man navigates through this thing finding words I didn’t even know were on there. When we do songs, he’ll tap through as many of the words as he can match. Just cos he doesn’t speak, doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand. Even better, he sometimes not only touches the word, he mouths along with it- effectively increasing moments when we actual hear him speak. I still hope for a time when we don’t need this, but the alternative wasn’t good for him or us. All the Frustration as we tried to guess what he was trying to share. We try to never leave home without this and while we could load the software to other devices, we’ve been advised that it’s best to have just one dedicated device that only serves as his communication device as opposed to a tablet for watching cartoons/playing games. It may be an imperfect tool but it’s a very useful one. #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptancemonth #autismisbeautiful #neurodiverse #autismfamily #autismparents #autismawareness #aacdevice #nonverbal #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism #nonspeakingautism #onthespectrum #autistickids

➡️SHARE with another autism parent if you have been there. I’ve seen this happen on too many occasions. My sweet little girl walks up to some other kids and ask them to be her friend. Every once in a while, the child or a group of kids will say sure and off they go, and that’s a happy day. But more often than I like, I see a couple kids look at each other with a look that says we’re not interested or just say “no”. And I know they don’t owe her anything but then she might try to insert herself in their play and she doesn’t understand what’s happening and it’s just so heartbreaking to watch.💔 #autismmom #autismparents #autismparent #pathologicaldemandavoidance

This isn't a story about magic. It's a story about what happens when a child gets real developmental support instead of just fear, labels, or waiting. When challenges show up early, time matters. A child's brain is plastic. But it doesn't change from hope alone, it changes from environment, interaction, and consistent work. 1. Working on emotional understanding. The child is taught to recognize, name, and process emotions, not just "behave better." This lowers anxiety and improves behavior from the inside out. 2. Play therapy focused on emotional intelligence. Through play, the child learns connection, flexibility, and understanding others, without pressure or constant correction. 3. Boundaries, and again boundaries. Healthy, consistent boundaries create safety for the brain. No "no… but okay." Inconsistency from adults often worsens behavior more than the child's actual difficulties. 4. Parent regulation. A calm adult helps the child's nervous system learn to regulate. 5. Not waiting for things to "fix themselves." Waiting without action costs the most valuable developmental time. This isn't about "fixing" a child. It's about creating conditions where their nervous system can develop instead of constantly survive. Progress often looks like fewer visible struggles, but behind it is deep, intentional work. Comment START and I'll send you a short guide that explains why calm parenting often breaks and what actually needs to change before any strategy works. #parenting #childdevelopment #autismparents #emotionalintelligence #momlife

We’ve met so many amazing people on here, and a lot of them are parents of nonverbal autistic children who wanted to know what age Jaiden started talking and/or holding conversations with me after being considered nonverbal early on in our Autism journey. In short, Jaiden started talking at around 4 years old. Up until then, he communicated through babbling, echolalia (the repetition of words, sounds, and phrases), and vocal stimming as attempts to interact and express himself. These early vocalizations are not meaningless and should be supported as they play a significant role in developing a child’s language skills. Some ask what I did to help Jaiden talk, but honestly, there’s no blueprint, no one-size-fits-all approach in this journey. Even after he started talking, it took more time for him to fully understand, build his vocabulary, and hold conversations. I will say that Speech Therapy also helped a lot. We started through Early Intervention, had sessions multiple times a week, and continued from around age 3 ½ until the end of 5th grade, when I was told he no longer needed it. While it’s a blessing to hear our children speak, what really matters is connecting with them in ways that meet them where they are and make them feel the most supported, seen, and included. Whether it’s through an AAC device, sign language, or even a hug or smile, it’s beautiful and important because it comes from our kids. Even when he was nonverbal, I always talked to him and held “conversations” with him because I knew he could hear me and I wanted to make sure he was part of the conversation rather than always outside of it. These days, it’s hard to get him to stop talking 😂 Please remember that’s what’s for our kids won’t miss them, in their own time and their own ways. And we don’t need to follow general timelines. We take things a day at a time with lots of love, patience, faith, tenacity, and teamwork! 💙 @jai_at_play #autism #autismparents #nonverbalautism #viral #relatable

Only made it through this once without crying, so it’s not perfect. But it feels important, as I understand the feelings that some of the judgement and scrutiny can bring ❤️ I’m an autism mum. Of course, you’ll see me leaving places early. You’ll see me changing nappies, and helping my daughter eat. You’ll see me carrying her, and giving her a bottle. You’ll see me co-sleeping, and using screens. In fact, you’ll probably see me making a lot of choices that, in a split second, you might judge. But every choice we make as parents is about helping our daughter navigate spaces that weren’t made for her, so that she can have the same opportunities to see the world, and for that world to see her. Because the first step to being included, is being seen. And if you take a moment to look past that split-second judgment, you’ll see her. You’ll see her figuring out her own milestones, and putting her whole heart into getting there. You’ll see her showing you the ways she finds her calm. You’ll see that she knows exactly what brings her joy and just how much she wants to share that joy and love with you. Because of course, no one tells this story better than Nora herself. You just have to look, and see her. #autism #autismawareness #autismparents

They’re not trying to be mean or irresponsible, their brains process events differently. Cultivating empathy will go a long way towards getting through to your child and having a positive relationship in which they can reflect and take ownership. Don’t forget to model it yourself! I posted about this in my stories and so many people have replied that I figured it needed to be a post. 😂 These clips are actually not Abby! This is her little sister, Elsie. She just turned 4 a little over a month ago. I’ve mentioned a few times in posts and stories our suspicions that she may be autistic too, and she actually has an evaluation coming up! Believe me, more updates will be coming about all of that. And also all of her autistic traits, because it’s not all the same as Abby. But in the meantime, let’s talk about finger posturing! I first saw this referenced in another Instagram post years ago, and then happened to see it in a picture of Abby from when she was 2. I literally do not remember her doing it, and I can only find a handful of pictures of her with postured hands, so it must have been a pretty short phase. But when I first saw Elsie do it, I recognized it immediately. 👀 The summer she was 2 we noticed it a lot, particularly when she was overwhelmed or really focusing on something. Now here we are at 4 and it’s still the same. It’s like a little clue about how she’s feeling. She can be doing her best masking, but those hands always give away when she’s actually stressed. In conversations about early autistic traits, hand flapping is often one of the first things asked about. And yeah, that is a really common example of stimming, but it is certainly not the only one! And before anyone tries to tell me that hand posturing alone doesn’t mean she is autistic, trust me, I know. I have a whoooole list of other things that didn’t make it into this post. Feel free to stick around if you want to find out what they are! 😉 *I also had an interesting convo with a friend who has a neurotypical 2 year old about this. I asked her if her son had ever done anything resembling hand posturing or if, to her knowledge, NT kids ever did that. She mentioned kids often doing odd hand/finger movements as they are developing fine motor skills, but they would only be for a few days. She also sent some examples of her son doing things like that, and there was a noticeable difference in the tensity / duration of his finger movements!
