DE#MakingThings 🪁How do you automate a miniature Viking warrior’s hair blowing in an imaginary breeze? How do you build a wooden hedgehog and ferret so they clap their hands in sync? How do you make a thimble-sized ice skater pirouette? These are just a few recent challenges @stoccafisso_design (Amedeo Capelli) has set for himself in his home garage “laboratory.” Amedeo, an inventor and sculptor who creates mechanical toys — or “automatons” — full of artistic details and wonder, taught himself this craft last summer after craving a new project. “I love popular folklore and mysterious stories, so my characters follow various universes, from fairytale to fantasy,” he says. “And I like to depict the elements of nature, such as the wind making a kite fly.” Amedeo says inspiration for his kinetic sculptures can strike at any time – especially when observing the gestures of people or animals in his rural Italian village. Each piece takes between one and four days to complete; nearly 300 small automatons are already under Amedeo’s belt. Larger-scale creations and more complex scenes are coming soon, he says. “I always have so much more in my mind.” 💭
