HOW TO LIMIT YOUR EXPOSURE TO ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS: BPA & HIDDEN ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS @drshannaswan on the Huberman Lab podcast - There’s growing interest in hormone disruptors present in disposable plastic bottles used for drinking water, and in the lining of cans, in particular soup cans, and some soda and energy drink cans (not all!). We should applaud the effort that certain companies have taken to make materials BPA free, but we should also call on them to eliminate other endocrine disruptors they, ahem, snuck in to replace BPA… - On episode of the Huberman Lab podcast out now, Dr. Shanna Swan— who is thee foremost world expert on these topics, emphasizes that we would all do well to avoid drinking out of disposable plastic bottles, avoid handling of receipts (because of the inks which are endocrine disruptors) and avoid the use of fragranced creams, and she mentions a few other things as well. - All this is especially important for pregnant women, children, or anyone who is concerned about their endocrine and fertility health. Dr Swan presents the data on the podcast. She is a self declared skeptic and only makes statements from a stance of strong findings, no hyperbole. - There’s no avoiding contact with all plastics, but we would all do well to avoid our exposure to the most potent BPAs (and similar) and Phthalate containing materials. - Incidentally (and she said fine to share!) There are a lot of easy alternatives that will help significantly reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals. The goal is not to 100% eliminate exposure, that’s not realistic. PS: Brands should be held responsible for littering our planet with plastic (which has proven to be ineffective to recycle) and without our knowing polluting our food and drinks with chemicals (hormone disrupters) that cause a laundry list of health issues. Sulforaphane could aid in the body’s natural detoxification of endocrine-disrupting chemicals commonly associated with microplastics, like BPA, BPS, and phthalates. Found in broccoli sprouts at a concentration 100X higher than that of mature broccoli, sulforaphane is the most potent dietary activator of the NRF2 pathway, a master regulator of detoxification. This pathway ramps up phase II detoxification enzymes that bind to harmful chemicals, including BPA, and make them more water-soluble, facilitating excretion. Animal studies have shown that when rodents are exposed to BPA and given sulforaphane, their phase 2 detox enzymes are increased, and they experience less overall toxicity. There’s not a lot of direct evidence here, but the mechanism is solid. Sulforaphane supplementation also enhances the excretion of air pollution toxins like benzene and acrolein by up to 60%. Adding sulforaphane-rich foods like broccoli sprouts or using quality sulforaphane supplements can boost the body’s detox pathways - in humans. This can potentially enhance the breakdown and elimination of harmful chemicals like BPA, BPS, and phthalates, supporting overall detoxification.
