JAA woman messaged me recently about her cow.
Seven weeks fresh and suddenly cycling hard.
Not subtle “maybe she’s in heat” signs.
I mean obvious heats… kicking, acting uncomfortable, the whole show.
Her question was simple:
“Do you think I should have the vet out to check for cysts?”
Fair question. When something feels off with a cow, your mind immediately goes to what could be wrong.
But then she added something that caught my attention.
She said,
“Normally she doesn’t cycle until I wean the calf… but I’m feeding her way better this lactation.”
And that’s when I told her something that might sound surprising.
This might not be cysts at all.
When a cow calves, she loses body condition. That’s normal.
Then she moves toward peak milk production.
Around that 6–8 week mark, if nutrition is right, something else starts happening too.
Her body starts recovering. She starts gaining condition.

Which means…
She cycles. And sometimes she cycles hard.
