A woman messaged me recently about her cow. Seven weeks fresh and suddenly cycling hard. Not subtle “maybe she’s in heat” signs. I mean obvious heats… kicking, acting uncomfortable, the whole show. Her question was simple: “Do you think I should have the vet out to check for cysts?” Fair question. When something feels off with a cow, your mind immediately goes to what could be wrong. But then she added something that caught my attention. She said, “Normally she doesn’t cycle until I wean the calf… but I’m feeding her way better this lactation.” And that’s when I told her something that might sound surprising. This might not be cysts at all. When a cow calves, she loses body condition. That’s normal. Then she moves toward peak milk production. Around that 6–8 week mark, if nutrition is right, something else starts happening too. Her body starts recovering. She starts gaining condition. Energy balance improves. Hormones stabilize. Her reproductive system wakes back up. Which means… She cycles. And sometimes she cycles hard. Good nutrition doesn’t just support milk production. It supports: • hormone balance • uterine recovery • strong ovulation • fertility A few days later she messaged me again. The vet had come out. No cysts. In fact, the vet said her uterus was “as small and smooth as a heifer.” The likely reason for those strong heats? Her nutrition was right. This is why Ben and I talk about feeding so much. Nutrition isn’t just about milk in the bucket. It affects the entire cow her metabolism, fertility, immune system, and longevity. When you feed the cow in front of you well… her body tells the truth. And sometimes that truth shows up as a cow cycling so strongly you think something must be wrong. Often it’s actually the sign that things are going very right. It’s been difficult to come back to IG after a tough week of farming 🫤 The great news is PopTart and PeanutButter are doing well. PopTart has a lot of healing to do but she’s improving and getting so much TLC. My children are all back to healthy as well, but let me say having all sick kids while dealing with a farm crisis was tough! PopTart was down for 4 days. I *thought* I had done everything to prevent milk fever. I also thought when she went down it was a pinched nerve so I waited to treat her. Was it one of the other? 🤷‍♀️I treated her for both and ultimately had to give her an IV of calcium and a tube of CMPK 12hrs later. She is still bruised, sore, and limping from being down for so long. Homeopathy and herbs have been incredible and I’m reminded of why I spend so much time and effort gardening for herbs to benefit livestock. I’m not sure I would have stayed sane without the guidance and knowledge of @sweetalysse at @athenas.hill Farming is humbling and can feel a lot like a shot in the dark. Intuition is magic though and I’m glad I have learned to listen to it✨ #farmlife #dairycows

Our little guy, born a month premature, who we raised on a bottle, had a pretty tough go. There were more than a handful of times we braced ourselves to lose him. Getting his strength up and helping his immune system along wasn’t always easy. MD spent a lot of time and energy to bring Melman back to health, and get him to where he is today. I’m so blessed to have a husband who pours so much of himself into every life around him. There were quite a few prayers, late nights, and early mornings. Going back out to check on him and feed well after our dinner when we just wanted to go to bed. God marked him with a special stamp, and he makes us laugh every day with his antics. He’s best friends with the border collie, loves a good chin scratch, and likes to laze around in the sun. He’s going to be a VERY big pasture pet. #calves #holsteincalf #babycalf #babyanimals #melman

“What? Things go wrong every day with livestock. My entire childhood was full of us dealing with something, however, it was worth every single issue.” people who grew up with livestock just know. And people who are new… Somehow believe that those other people just didn’t know what they were talking about. Because they learned about livestock from marketing campaigns. Marketing campaigns run by people who are selling regenerative livestock products. And what better way to sell it regenerative livestock product then tell your customers how healthy your animals are and how they never need a vet. Except they do. They just don’t call the vet. There’s a difference. I’m not saying all regenerative farmers don’t call vets. That’s not what I’m saying, so just stop. I’m saying it happens far more than it should. Far more. And it’s romanticized at conferences in a way that would make you throw up in your mouth. Maybe that’s just me. It always follows me when people get one our first aid kits — that we only started offering because there was not a decent one available anywhere — and post on social media: “Hope we ever need it!” I’m sorry to burst your bubble. But you’re gonna need it. In fact, one of our stockholders exchange members who came and stayed on the farm and then went home with her first aid kit used it before she even unpacked her car. Why? Because their animals got in the grain bins while she was gone. Grain overload will unalive an animal and by the time you get a vet out it’s often too late. so note to self: before you go out of town, this spring or this summer, educate the people taking care of your animals that getting in the grain bins for any of your critters other than a pig or a chicken is a huge problem. It needs to be dealt with immediately and you need stuff on hand to deal with it. All of that stuff is in our first aid kit. We have three different options for your budget and species. Everyone needs the bare bones at a minimum. The bare bones also has impossible-to-find items that you really need so it can supplement an existing kit. Reply KIT.
