One of the sweetest things to watch is when a baby wakes up… and instead of crying, they’re just lying there smiling, kicking, or babbling. Most parents immediately think: “Should I pick them up?” But moments like this are actually very interesting from a development point of view. When babies wake calmly, their brain is still in a kind of learning window between sleep and full wakefulness. They’re practicing sounds. Moving their bodies. Exploring the world a little before asking for help. This is how their nervous system slowly learns to move between sleep and wakefulness. And interestingly… babies who wake up calm and curious often have a nervous system that feels more regulated. Not perfect. Just supported in the right way during the day and evening. Because baby sleep isn’t only about falling asleep. It’s about helping their brain learn how to move through sleep cycles without going into stress mode. That’s exactly what we focus on inside my 7 Days to Calm Nights foundation. Not cry-it-out. Not strict schedules. Just simple steps that help regulate your baby’s nervous system so nights and wake-ups start feeling calmer and more predictable. 🥰 If your baby is 0–6 months and nights feel a little chaotic right now, comment “SLEEP” and I’ll send you the details 🌙 #babysleep #newbornsleep #babysleeptips #tiredmomclub #newmomlife postpartummom fourthtrimester sleepdeprivedmom gentleparenting babydevelopment firsttimemom calmernights

I was shocked when I learned this. If your baby keeps scratching their head, rubbing their face, or pulling at their hair… it’s not always random. Sometimes, it’s one of the clearest signs they’re overtired. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies don’t just “get sleepy” quietly — they show physical cues when their nervous system is overwhelmed and ready for rest. Here’s what head scratching can actually mean: Head scratching or rubbing This is often a self-soothing behavior. Babies use repetitive motions to calm their bodies when they’re tired. Face rubbing As sleep pressure builds, babies instinctively touch their face and eyes to try to settle themselves. Hair pulling or ear touching This can look concerning, but in many cases it’s just another way babies regulate themselves before sleep. Getting more fussy while doing it If the scratching is paired with crankiness, it’s usually not a skin issue — it’s exhaustion building up. Zoning out or slowing down When you see this with the scratching, your baby is past the “sleepy window” and getting overtired. Important note: If you see redness, rashes, or constant irritation in one spot, it’s worth checking with your pediatrician to rule out eczema or skin sensitivity. But most of the time? Your baby isn’t trying to hurt themselves… They’re trying to tell you: “I’m tired.” The key is catching these cues early and pairing them with age-appropriate wake windows. That’s when sleep gets so much easier. You feed them. You rock them. You do everything right. Two hours later… they’re up again. And everyone says: “They’re just hungry.” For newborns? Yes. Often they are. In the first 8–12 weeks, frequent waking is normal, necessary, and healthy. Especially for breastfed babies who digest quickly. We want that. But after the newborn phase, many 2-hour wake-ups aren’t about hunger. They’re about regulation. Around 4 months, babies begin cycling through sleep stages more like adults. Some nervous systems reconnect sleep smoothly. Others spike into alert mode. So they cry. And feeding becomes the fastest way to calm the spike. Not because you’re doing anything wrong. Not because connection is bad. Not because feeding is wrong. But because the foundation underneath sleep isn’t stable yet. And this is where most parents get stuck. They try to fix wake-ups directly. But night wakings are often a bedtime structure problem. When I stopped trying to “fix” every wake-up and started building regulation before sleep… everything shifted. No cry it out. No ignoring hunger. No forcing independence. Just structure. Predictability. Nervous system support. Within days, bedtime felt calmer. Within a week, longer stretches started showing up. If your baby is 0–6 months and you’re stuck in the 90–120 minute loop after the newborn phase… 👀 Comment “SLEEP” to get the full 7-Day Calm Nights system. 🥰 It shows you exactly what to change, in what order, over 7 simple evenings — so you build sleep that actually holds. Connection and rest can coexist. Currently on sale! #babysleep #gentlesleeptraining #babysleephelp #babysleeptips #sleepdeprivedmom videocredit: alla_momlife (TT)

You didn’t do anything wrong. Your baby just thinks 5am is morning. And once a baby’s body clock decides that… they will wake up ready to start the day while you feel like you got hit by a truck. Early morning wakes are actually the part of sleep parents take the most personally. Because at bedtime you can try again tomorrow. But 5am? You’re holding a wide-awake baby in a dark house while the rest of the world is asleep and your brain immediately goes to: “Why can’t I fix this?” “Why is everyone else’s baby sleeping later?” “Did I create this?” Here’s what’s really happening. Around 4–6am your baby’s sleep is biologically the lightest it gets all night. Melatonin is dropping. The wake hormone (cortisol) is rising. Sleep pressure is almost empty. So tiny things suddenly matter A LOT: a slightly late bedtime a missed nap too much stimulation in the evening light creeping into the room or simply being overtired And the one thing almost every parent tries? Putting baby to bed later. Unfortunately a later bedtime doesn’t push morning later, it often pulls it earlier. An overtired body releases more cortisol overnight, and cortisol = earlier waking. Your baby isn’t choosing 5am. Their circadian rhythm locked onto it. Which is why rocking longer, feeding back to sleep, or bringing them into your bed might work for a day… but the next morning it’s 5:02am again. The good news: Early morning wakings are actually very fixable when you change the right variables (and not all at once). I made a super simple doc you can follow without guessing. 😪 People always say: “Sleep when the baby sleeps.” But what they don’t tell you is… newborns are surprisingly noisy sleepers. 💛Grunting. ❤️Squeaking. 💜Little sighs. 💚Sudden arm and leg movements. Scientifically, this happens because newborns spend about 50% of their sleep in active sleep (REM sleep), much more than adults. During this stage, their brain is very active while the body is still learning how to regulate breathing, digestion, and movement. That’s why babies might make sounds, stretch, or twitch even while they are still asleep. Their nervous system is still developing, and these tiny noises are simply part of the process. 👉🏻 So if your baby sounds like a tiny night-time orchestra… don’t worry. It’s actually a sign that their brain and body are growing and learning. #newborn #babyroutine #babysleep #babysleeptips #firsttimemum #sahm Cre: babyavitaajhundal

Ever feel like you’re defusing a bomb when you lower your baby into the crib? You spent 20 minutes rocking them. Your arms are numb. You move like a ninja toward the bassinet. 🥷 You’re millimeters away from freedom… and then the second their head hits the mattress… BAM. Eyes wide open. 👁️👄👁️ This isn’t a “bad sleeper”, it’s the Moro Reflex. When a baby’s head drops lower than their body during a transfer, their brain thinks they’re falling. To fix it, try the “Feet, Seat, then Sleep” method: 1️⃣ Feet first: Let their toes touch the mattress first. 🦶 2️⃣ Bottom second: Lower the hips slowly to keep their center of gravity stable. 3️⃣ The Side-Roll: Gently roll them onto their back and side. This keeps the limbs “tucked” and prevents the startle! 🔄 By landing the feet first and keeping the head elevated until the very last second, you bypass that “falling” sensation entirely. 🙌 Save this for your next nap time attempt and share it with a tired parent! 💤☕️ #babysleep #newbornsleep #moroReflex #parentinghacks #fourthtrimester sleeptips firsttimemom infantdevelopment sleepybaby

Everyone says “try an earlier bedtime.” But no one tells you why. So let me. After about 8–12 weeks, your baby’s internal clock starts maturing. That’s when melatonin (the sleep hormone) becomes more organized and nighttime sleep begins consolidating. And here’s the part most parents don’t know: A baby’s deepest, longest stretch of sleep biologically happens in the earlier part of the night. Not at 10 PM. Not at midnight. Earlier. Large sleep studies consistently show that babies who go to bed before 8 PM tend to have: • longer nighttime sleep • fewer wakings • more consolidated rest That doesn’t mean every baby needs a strict 6:30 PM bedtime. But once your baby is past the true newborn stage (around 2–3 months), there’s usually a sweet spot, and for most babies, it lands somewhere between 6–8 PM. When bedtime drifts too late, what do we see? False starts. Overtired meltdowns. Split nights. Early morning wakes. Cortisol starts rising in the early morning hours. And when you miss that biological window, you’re working against sleep pressure instead of with it. Baby sleep isn’t random. And when you align your baby sleep schedule with biology instead of vibes? Nights get easier. If your baby sleep routine feels all over the place and you’re not sure where that sweet spot is, I made a free guide that walks you through common sleep disruptors + includes my wake window chart. Waiting for the 4 month sleep regression to “end”? 😴This can happen Anytime between 3-5 months!! One family I worked with was stuck in a cycle with their 4-month-old waking up at 11 p.m., 1, 3, 4, and 5 a.m. 😩 They assumed it was all the sleep regression and that baby was hungry—but the truth? It was a combination of baby starting to reverse cycle feed overnight and relying on feeding and rocking as a soothing mechanism. Within a few nights of implementing her sleep plan her baby slept through the night without a feed. And, her daytime feeds improved too! 💫This is the GOLDEN time to work on independent sleep.😴 3-4 month olds are the FASTEST to adapt when sleep training!!! Sleep cycle changes are permanent so you won’t see an “End Date” when it comes to the 4 month sleep regression. And You don’t have to wait for the 4 month sleep regression to END before sleep training! In the thick of it? 😵‍💫Comment 𝗘𝗡𝗗 and I’ll send you a link to my blog with tips to help! tips to navigate this tricky phase. 🆘 If you feel like you’re back to newborn sleep with multiple wake ups overnight and lots of effort to get baby to sleep my Well Rested sleep courses can HELP your baby fall asleep independently, sleep through night, and take more predictable naps! 1:1 coaching available starting at 3 months!
