HA27 miles all over.. 6 weeks to BPN Backyard Ultra!
Today’s adventure took me on trails with my friend Brandon who was simulating a Backyard Ultra. Also, an off trail Barkley style portion where I discovered this old school bus, and some road sections connecting my home.
These are some of my top suggestions for your best Backyard Ultra!
1) Have a strong crew person and prep your gear, food, tent, apparel, etc.
2) Pace yourself. Hills basically always walk, jog and imagine going forever. Lap times vary depending on the course but for Bigs Backyard my trail loops are probably 52 min. and nighttime loops on the road 48-50 min. for at least the first 2-3 days. Then I go slower. Going slower than 55 to 55:30 minute yards is harder to maintain forever.
3) Practice sleeping for 3-5 minutes even if you don’t fall asleep.
4) Nutrition and hydration are vital. You must be consistent. Miss an hour and it may be your downfall. I typically aim for 300 or more calories per hour.
5) To make the 15 person USA Team for the World Championship in October at Laz’s race - Bigs Backyard, you need to win one of the seven qualifying races, or be amongst the top eight in the country for furthest distance covered in a Backyard Ultra.
