How to analyze a balance sheet 👉 Follow @nicolasboucherfinance for more practical content! Stop focusing on P&L only Here are 5 ratios I use when analyzing a balance sheet: —— 1️⃣ Quick Ratio 🎯Goal: Check the solvency of a company and how fast they can repay their short-term debts with their quick assets. 💡Formula: Quick Assets / Current Liabilities (where Quick Assets = Current Assets - Inventory) —— 2️⃣ Inventory Turnover 🎯Goal: Measure how many months of inventory you have on your balance sheet. 💡Formula: Cost of Goods Sold / Average Inventory Note: use the Cost of Goods Sold over the last 12 months, and this ratio will measure how many months of inventory you have. For example: COGS of 100m$ / Inventory of 25m$ means that on average, your inventory will last a quarter (3 months). —— 3️⃣ Asset Turnover 🎯Goal: Check how much CAPEX are needed for each $ earned. The higher the number, the less assets you need to make revenues. 💡Formula: Turnover / Net Tangible Assets —— 4️⃣ Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC) 🎯Goal: check how many days you need to convert your cash out (for inventory in cash in (from sales) 💡Formula: Days of Inventory Outstanding + Days Sales Outstanding - Days Payable Outstanding Note: Days of Inventory Outstanding = Average inventory for a month / Cost of Good Solds * 365 Days Sales Outstanding = Receivables / Annual Revenue * 365 Payable Days = Payables / Annual COGS * 365 —— 5️⃣ Working capital 🎯Goal: Measure the capital used to finance the daily operations. If you reduce it, you can free some capital to invest in CAPEX or new investments 💡Formula: Current Assets - Current Liabilities #finance #accounting #balancesheet #balancesheets #balancesheetknowledge #balancesheetaccounting #kpi #kpis #roa #roe #inventory

Yes, I worked in Investment banking at Morgan Stanley, and yet I constantly find myself looking up things I “should” have known. Terms I use all the time, but when put on the spot (usually by my kids) the foundation is shaky. Now for me it's no longer stocks vs. bonds (although I definitely googled that years into the job), rather the inner workings of the Fed and FX, the point though is… …The most fundamental concepts in finance are rarely formally taught — it’s just assumed you know. Our last video went through how debt and equity investors invest differently, but here’s where you’d actually start if an intern asked you the difference: STOCK (EQUITY) Stock is your ownership stake in a business. Sometimes you get voting rights, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you’re paid a dividend, sometimes you’re not. But when you say “equity,” you have to specify — BOOK VALUE or MARKET VALUE? They’re not the same thing. Book value is what’s on the balance sheet. As a banker, that was about as much as I needed to know. But it’s made up of contributed capital (common stock, preferred stock, treasury stock, APIC, non-controlling interest) and earned capital (retained earnings and AOCI). Add it all up = book value of equity. Market value is what someone would actually pay. Public company? Share price × total shares outstanding = market cap. Private company? You’re looking at comps. BONDS (DEBT) A bond is a loan packaged into a tradeable security. You lend money, they pay you interest — usually a fixed coupon — and at maturity you get your principal back. You’re not an owner. You don’t get upside if the company crushes it. You just want your money back plus interest. Bonds also have book and market value. Par value is typically $1,000 — what the issuer owes you at maturity. Market value fluctuates based on rates, credit risk, and supply/demand. Rates up = bond price down. And just like equity has common, preferred, etc. — debt has senior secured, senior unsecured, sub debt, mezz, convertible. Where you sit in that stack determines what happens if things go wrong.

If you can’t answer this P&L question, you’re NOT ready for your next finance interview. Watch me break it down in 30 seconds with a dead-simple flow + real examples. Here’s the exact Income Statement ladder 👇 Revenue (top line) (–) COGS → Gross Profit (–) OpEx (salaries, rent, marketing) → Operating Income / EBIT (+) D&A → EBITDA (for EV/EBITDA multiples) (–) Interest +/- Non-op income/expenses → PBT (–) Tax → PAT (bottom line to balance sheet) Master this flow now. Comment “YES” if you want the exact interview answer to memorize. Save + tag a friend preparing for finance interviews!! If you’re a finance student or a finance professional don’t just study concepts. Build proof. Here are the projects that actually change your career trajectory and why they matter. 1. Business Autopsy Pick a company like or Hindustan Unilever, ITC. Break down how it makes money, where cash really comes from, ROCE trends, working capital cycle, and capital allocation decisions. Why it matters: You start thinking like a CFO, not a student. 2. Three Statement Financial Model Build a fully linked income statement, balance sheet and cash flow model with scenarios. Why it matters: This is the backbone of investment banking, FP&A and serious finance roles. 3. Valuation Lab Do a proper DCF and reverse DCF on companies. Add sensitivity analysis. Why it matters: You learn to think in expectations, not opinions. 4. Industry Deep Dive Map industry size, growth drivers, margins, competition and risks. Compare players. Why it matters: You develop strategy vocabulary and boardroom thinking. 5. Working Capital Simulation Model how receivables, inventory and payables impact cash flow. Why it matters: You connect finance to operations. That’s real leverage. 6. Budgeting and Variance Dashboard Create a monthly budget model and explain variances. Why it matters: Teaches accountability and managerial thinking. 7. Capital Allocation Tracker Study 10 years of dividends, buybacks, debt and acquisitions for a company like. Why it matters: You learn to judge management quality. 8. Stock Pitch Deck Build a 15 slide investment pitch with thesis, risks and valuation. Why it matters: Communication separates average finance people from leaders. Build these and you won’t just “know finance”. You’ll operate like a professional. Final takeaway Core finance roles go to people who can show real work. Projects are that proof. Save this reel if you dont want it to get lost. Comment "Projects" if you want this in your DMs. I dont ask people to compulsarily follow before sharing links through the bot. So, if you are in finance and care about your growth, you shouldnt miss out. Follow now Share this with a friend who would benefit this this to show that you care❤
