I moved here thinking I was “moving to Spain”… but the Basque Country is basically its own world (in the best way). Here are a few things I wish someone told me sooner: ✨ 1. The weather is NOT what you picture when you think Spain. Yes, it’s green. Yes, it rains. And yes… you will still fall in love with it. But always have an umbrella and accept that cloudy beach days are part of the charm. 🍅 2. The quality of the food is unreal. Even the “basic” groceries taste like they came from a farm. Tomatoes actually taste like tomatoes, eggs are richer, and bread is just… better. It ruined me for grocery shopping anywhere else. 🗣️ 3. Basque culture is strong — and it’s different from the rest of Spain. The pride here is real, traditions are deeply respected, and people don’t identify as Spanish… they identify as Basque, and I love that. 📍 4. Everyone lives outside. Rain, cold, wind… doesn’t matter. People are walking, meeting friends, eating outside, hiking, surfing. The lifestyle is active without even trying. 💸 5. It’s not “cheap Spain.” San Sebastián is stunning… but it comes with a price tag. Rent and daily life can be surprisingly expensive compared to other Spanish cities. 🐢 6. Life moves slower here — and that’s not a bad thing. People aren’t rushing everywhere. Meals are long. Coffee isn’t grabbed in a car. Time with friends and family is prioritized, and at first it feels strange… but eventually it becomes one of the best parts of living here. 👀 7. People may seem reserved at first. It can take time to build community here. But once you do, it feels real and lasting — not surface-level. 🏔️ 8. You get the best of everything in one place. Beach mornings, mountain hikes, France 20 minutes away, the best food you’ve ever eaten, and a city that feels safe and walkable. And honestly… I’d do it all over again, every time 🤍 #donostia #sansebastian #basquecountry #donostiasansebastian #donosti

If you’re visiting San Sebastián for the first time, here’s how I’d spend a weekend: This beautiful, incredibly walkable city in Spain’s Basque Country, right near the French border, is best experienced slowly, on foot. 🚶‍♀️ I’d spend a lot of time simply wandering the streets and taking in the architecture, the art, and the coastal views. Mornings are for the beach. I’d walk La Concha Beach, especially at low tide, combing for sea glass. Some of the best pieces I’ve ever found came from this shoreline. You can’t visit without hopping between pintxos bars. My must stops are Bar Bergara and Ganbara for incredible selections, flavors, and service. I’ve been known to end up at Bergara ( @montykaty )more than once. I’d also carve out time for a hike up Monte Ulia, where there’s a beautiful loop with sweeping coastal views. For a sit down meal, I’d head underground to @restauranteikaitz , a Michelin recommended spot that’s well worth booking ahead. And skipping dessert would not even cross my mind, in fact some day I’m just gunna go there and order every dessert. For something a little quirky, I’d take the funicular up Monte Igueldo to the funkiest little amusement park you’ve ever seen. The views from the mysterious river ride are, in my opinion, some of the best in the city. San Sebastián is the kind of place you explore on foot, stopping to eat along the way. If you’re traveling through this part of Spain, it’s a town you absolutely shouldn’t skip. 🌊🥖 #spaintravel #sansebastián #basquecountry #spain #travelislife

Originally a humble fruit shop more than 70 years ago, Casa Julián @casajuliandetolosa1951 in Tolosa is the place for a perfect chuleton in the Basque Country. In its early days, the shop served simple ham sandwiches and vermouth on Sundays; everything changed when Julián’s friend returned from Argentina with grills, metal rods and a new philosophy of cooking over fire. Julián became so captivated by grilling that he hosted “discussion days” with local surgeons and doctors to debate the anatomy of the perfect cut. He opened Casa Julián in 1951, later entrusting it to his close friend Matías Gorrochategui, whose three sons now run the asadors in Tolosa and Madrid. The steaks, typically aged around 20 to 30 days, are seasoned generously with salt, rested and returned to the grill to achieve that signature crust with a remarkably tender centre. Since 1951, the menu has barely changed, and the candied piquillo peppers remain one of its iconic dishes. @inakigorrochategui1954

🔥 Hike the real Dragonstone 🐉 Hi, we’re Sandra & Matt, chasing bucket-list adventures and unforgettable places around the world. And this one feels straight out of a fantasy. Just off the coast of northern Spain sits San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a tiny island connected to the mainland by a winding stone bridge and 241 dramatic steps. If it looks familiar, that’s because this is the real-life filming location for Dragonstone in Game of Thrones, where Daenerys first set foot in Westeros. But even if you’ve never watched the show, the hike alone is worth it. The views over the Bay of Biscay, the waves crashing against the cliffs, and the tiny hermitage at the top make this one of the most unique places in Spain. ✨ Save this for your Spain trip — here’s what to know: • 📍 San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Basque Country) • 🚗 About 35 minutes from Bilbao • 🪜 241 steps to the top • 🔔 Tradition says to ring the bell 3 times for good luck One of the most cinematic hikes we’ve ever done. Follow along for more bucket-list adventures, hidden gems, and cultural experiences around the world. ✈️

It is built around a single street that runs along the sea. Some houses are literally right on the water’s edge! If you go between May 14 and 17, you can attend the Old Boat Festival! 🚌 How to get to the village of Pasaia Donibane? • From San Sebastian: take the bus towards Errenteria - get off at Pasaia San Pedro and take the boat (€1 per trip) • From Hendaye-Irun: take the train to Errenteria then walk to Pasaia San Pedro. ⛰️ Hike to Pasaia Donibane • Another option: why not hike there? You can take the coastal path to get there from either San Sebastian or Hendaye! Allow four hours for the walk each way, but the scenery is incredible (and you can take public transportation back). ❤️ Share this adorable village with your friends who love hiking and villages in the Basque Country. #inspirationvoyage #pasaia #paísvasco #paysbasqueespagnol #euskaditurismo | Visiter le Pays Basque | Voyage Espagne | Pasaia Donibane |

🇪🇸 When I started learning Spanish, I thought it was one language. Then I moved here and realised it’s so much bigger than that. Accents that completely change the sound of words. Regional identities that shape how people speak. And entire co-official languages I didn’t even know existed before I came to Spain. Catalán in Barcelona. Gallego in Galicia. Euskera in the Basque Country. I thought I was learning Spanish. What I was really learning was Spain. Be honest… did you know how linguistically diverse Spain was before you came here? 👇 Tell me what's the most difficult Spanish accent to understand? . . . . #learnspanish #movingabroad #learningspanish #spain #spanishculture

Shhh don’t tell anyone, but Guéthary is actually my favorite place in the Basque Country 🤍 It doesn’t have the extravagant villas and luxury shops of Biarritz, or the endless tapas bars of Bayonne. Instead, it offers simple beauty, a slow rhythm, and that feeling of being slightly out of time. Just cliffs, ocean air, small streets, and the sound of waves to get lost in. #basquecountry #francetourism #europetravels
