📍Stanford Dish Loop Trail - Palo Alto, CA One of the first peninsula hikes I did regularly was The Stanford Dish Loop Trail, or simply “The Dish”. Located just off 280 and right next to Stanford’s campus, it’s a super popular trail for hiking/walking & running. It’s paved & well-maintained with some hills to make it moderately challenging. But I just don’t consider this trail much anymore because it’s just too popular and can get really crowded, especially on weekends. But if you can go on a weekday or early on a weekend (and snag parking) then it’s worth it! My friend, who first introduced me to this trail many years ago, wanted to “walk the dish” recently so we met at 7am on a Saturday. I was quickly reminded why I loved coming here: green hills with plenty of wildflowers, turkey & deer roaming the hills; views of Stanford’s gorgeous campus & the surrounding areas; and of course The Dish looming large over everything. Except for a little bit of shade up a steep hill, the trail is mostly exposed to the sun. Foggy, overcast, or cooler weather are ideal for this hike. And while it’s paved and great for pushing strollers, no bikes or scooters are allowed. Even at 7am, street parking was full, but I got a spot at nearby Nixon Elementary which is available for parking during non-school hours. And by the time we finished, that parking lot was full too. So just be prepared to wait for a space. TRAIL DETAILS: 🥾Distance: 3.7 mile loop 📈 Elevation: +534’ 👍🏻 Difficulty: Easy to Moderate ❌ Dog Friendly: No ✅ Kid Friendly: Yes ⚠️ Parking: Free limited street parking. More parking at Nixon Elementary during non-school hours 🚻 Restrooms: Yes (At the trailhead at Junipero Serra Rd & Stanford Ave) #stanforddish #thedish #stanforddishtrail #7x7bayarea #stanforddishhikingtrail

Follow @outdoorwiseliving as we showcase the best of then Bay Area: Wrapping up our 5 part series of Mt. Diablo hikes is a hike worthy of revisiting in the spring when the waterfalls are flowing. This hike is the highest rated hike within 25 miles of Mt. Diablo, and while the waterfalls are dried up, there’s still a reason to come: the search for tarantulas! Mt Diablo is known for tarantula sightings from now until October as males are on the prowl looking for mates. Tarantulas are harmless to humans and often cross trails within Mount Diablo - please be very careful as they are sensitive to vibrations and often needlessly stomped on. On to the trail details: Trail: Waterfalls of Mt Diablo loop Distance: 8 miles, and about 1800 ft of elevation gain. It’s hard with some loose rock sections - took me 3 hrs to complete. Preparation: somewhat shaded, bring LOTs of water, long pants, and binoculars for tarantula spotting Overview and waypoints: park at the Mitchell Canyon visitor center and go on the Oak Road trail, which transitions to the Coulter Pines trail. Take Bruce Lee road to Back creek trail then to Meridian ridge road. You need to look out for Middle/Fall trail as this is where you access the falls. While they are dry, they still have some amazing views and worth giving you a taste of what’s worth coming back for. Return on Donner Canyon road before completing the loop. As for the tarantula, I saw it at 10am on Back Creek Trail. Supposedly they are more commonly seen in the early evening. If you see one, let us know, and be sure to check out our other four Mt. Diablo trail recommendations. **** We’re two parents on a mission to inspire people to spend more time outside.
