For years, I kept thinking I’d magically “get back into running” like I used to. I finally realized that I was making a fundamental psychological error: I was waiting for motivation instead of removing obstacles. So I made a ridiculously simple change instead. I started walking while answering emails. It’s been two weeks and I’ve walked almost 40 miles without even thinking about it. Behavioral psychology 101: The easier a behavior is, the more likely you are to repeat it. Forget the big life overhaul. If you want to change something, find the tiniest possible action that fits into the life you actually have, not the one you wish you had. #fitness #running #smallsteps #health #psychology #mytreadmillisugly #behavioranalysis #behavioralpsychology #healthpsychology

Apologies for the video quality and crazy hair…but I was asked to talk about 1 common misconception about autism. So I chose to speak on the idea that autistic people don’t feel empathy. This is untrue, autistic people DO experience empathy. Sometimes even more than would be “normal”. (Search “the double empathy problem”). Sometimes, autistic people have difficulty with perspective taking which is the ability to understand how someone else feels even if their feelings and experiences differ from your own. But not understanding someone perspective and not caring about it are totally different things. I can’t speak for all autistic people, but in general, autistic people DO care about the feelings of others. It’s just difficult to both identify peoples feelings and also know how to respond to them. #actuallyautistic #autism #empath #behavioranalysis #love #relationships #autisticwomen #disability #empathy #specialeducation

“Does anyone know if this is normal?” That’s what masking sounds like from the inside. When an autistic person learns to suppress their stims, mirror neuronormative body language, force eye contact, and perform “okay”, we call it “progress”. We record the data. We graph it. We celebrate it. But they are exhausted. Anxious. Disappearing. Masking is what happens when the environment sends a message that who you are isn’t safe to show. It’s a survival response. It is deeply intelligent. It is also deeply costly. Autistic adults who masked heavily for years report higher rates of depression, anxiety, burnout, and late diagnosis. Black and Brown autistic people, especially women and girls, mask the longest before anyone notices. As providers, we have to ask ourselves a harder question than “is the challenging behavior decreasing?” We have to ask, “Is this person safe enough to be themselves here?” Because if the goal of our work is quality of life (and it should be), then teaching someone to hide themselves more effectively is not a clinical win. It’s a warning sign we trained ourselves to read as success. Do better. Build environments where masking isn’t necessary. That’s the work. — 💾 Save this for your next team meeting. Humans are animals. ABA therapy is based on the science of behavior and the concepts and principles of respondent and operant conditioning. Literally the way all organisms learn. If you don’t understand what it is just say that. It’s a natural science and for us to not use it would be like saying we shouldn’t use physics, or chemistry because it works on animals too. #aba #behavioranalysis #appliedbehavioranalysis #behaviorscience #science

Believe it or not, this is WHY they don’t listen to anything else. Responsiveness to yelling is a learned behavior pattern. Instead of implementing behavior strategies like the ones I teach my clients, you started yelling when your kids didn’t listen and obey. Then they got used to not listening the first time you asked because they knew you would yell if you really meant it. This is how those learned behavior patterns start. ➡️ This is not who they are and this is not who you are. It’s just a learned behavior pattern… and you can change it, because - YOU’RE THAT MOM! #parentcoach #parentsupport #momshelpingmoms #behavioranalysis #connectedparenting
