I’ve decided to walk the Bibbulmun Track! This year has been absolutely packed with adventure and new experiences right around Australia for me so I’m excited to finally share that this is the next big one! As my first ever long distance hike I’ll be walking the 1,005km for the next month+ and sharing a daily dose of the outdoors along the way (or at least when I have service) 🥾🦎🍂 #bibbulmuntrack #westernaustralia #hikeaustralia #solohike

My first echidna of the Bibbulmun Track in southwestern Australia! These wild looking animals are monotremes, an ancient branch on the mammalian tree of life which split off from the rest of the mammals around 220-250 million years ago. Because of this, they retain some reptile-like traits that the rest of the mammals lost. Like reptiles they have a cloaca, the same shoulder bones as reptiles, lost in other mammals, a similar splayed out gait, and they lay leathery eggs, and they hatch from these eggs with the help of an egg tooth! However like all mammals they produce milk, have fur (all mammals do at some point of development), and are warm blooded, though they have one lowest body temperatures of about 91° F, among other traits. Of course I think the most interesting of these traits is their egg laying. Echidnas usually lay one egg into a pouch on their belly, and after it hatches, the baby echidna, called a puggle, lives in the pouch and feeds off of its mothers milk until it gets too spiny. After which the mother leaves the puggle in a burrow and only returns to feed it milk every week or so. As adults they eat almost exclusively ants and termites, which they can dig into their nests with powerful front limbs. When disturbed they dig into the ground and curl into a tight ball, showing all their spines to would be predators. Echidnas, of which there are four species, and the platypus are the only monotremes left on earth and all are found only in Australia and New Guinea, where until recently, they haven’t had to compete with placental mammals which can reproduce more efficiently and have larger litters of more developed young and as adults have faster metabolisms to hunt and forage more efficiently. It is so cool that this ancient linage has managed to persist to the present. The mammalian branch the Monotremes sit on has existed on earth for more than 100 million years before a flowering plant every bloomed. They’re about 150 million years older than grass. They’ve overlapped the majority of the existence of the dinosaurs, and just 5 modern species have made it to our time. Crazy.

🛶Canoe crossings on the Bibbulmun Track. Every section on the trail will throw something new in your direction. Those moments are when the adventure starts... ------------------------ 🥾Bibbulmun Track Section: 📍Peaceful Bay -> Boat Harbour Hut 👣24km and 668m ⬆️ 🛶Irwin Inlet: Only a few kms into the trail you will come across the river crossing, the bib track supplies canoes on either side, it's up to you to get to the otherside and leave enough canoes behind you. 🏕Rame Head Hut: has to be near the top of the list when it comes to camping huts and ocean views. 🌊The ocean is the pull to this area for most, but often, you are walking along dune ridge lines that offer a 360 degree view with the Quarram and Owingup Nature Reserves. -------------------------- @westernaustralia @australia #explorewa #hikingtheglobe #alltrails #bibbulmuntrack #wathedreamstate #wavc #ExploreParksWA #PeacefulBay #perthadventures #ourWAparks #HikeAustralia #southwestedge

Ever wondered how much it cost to thru hike? 🤔 I spent $3,165 on this 7 week adventure. It's a pretty cheap holiday really 😅 but here's some thoughts 👇 Food is clearly the biggest expense. And you could spend far less than me if you dehydrated your own meals, bought cheaper snack options, and didn't eat much town food... BUT I would never skimp on my food on a thru hike, it's such an important part of it, not only for the energy and nutrition, but also for the enjoyment. I had 5 rest days, so the accommodation does start to increase in cost the more rest days you have of course. In saying that, I actually camped at caravan parks several times, so this could easily have been higher if I'd wanted a proper bed more often. Logistics for this hike were quite affordable really. Obviously interstate hikers had flights and other expenses on top, while my van storage was only $30 per week. However, this is actually more than what I'd spend if I'd been in my van for the same amount of time, which is kinda wild 😅 I'd spend less on food in my van and also have no accommodation expenses, so I guess it makes sense! Was this more or less than you thought?? #bibbulmuntrack #australia #thruhike #thruhiking #solohiking #westernaustralia #womenwhohike

Your ultimate guide to the Bibbulmun Track 🗺️🥾 If you’re planning to hit the Bib Track — whether it’s a weekend section or the full 1000km — the official maps and guidebooks are an absolute must. The track is split into 8 sections, each with its own map and companion guide full of trail notes, campsite info, and helpful insights 🏕️ Sure, the trail’s well marked, but a physical map is still essential — phone batteries die, signal drops out, and it’s always worth having that peace of mind 📍 You can grab the full set straight from the Bibbulmun Track Foundation, or pick them up from one of the trail towns along the way. These have made planning my hikes so much easier — can’t recommend them enough 🙌 #bibbulmuntrack #hikewa #bibbulmuntrackfoundation #overnighthikes #australianhiking #weekendwarrior
