Researchers developed a new biomaterial by combining chitosan, a polymer from crustacean shells, with nickel ions and engineered small molecules. This composite forms tightly bonded networks, giving it flexibility and mechanical strength beyond many common plastics. Because it relies on renewable components, it offers a sustainable alternative for packaging, coatings, and structural materials. The team is working on scaling up production and testing the material in real-world applications, aiming to reduce the environmental footprint of everyday plastic use. Reimagining the future starts with a paradigm shift 💭 What if, rather than viewing old items as waste, we started thinking of them as the building blocks for new products? Epoch Biodesign are turning this vision into a reality. 🧪 Using AI-engineered enzymes, Epoch recycle nylon waste into its molecular components. ♻️ They divert airbags and end-of-life garments from landfill and use them as feedstock for virgin-quality products. Epoch’s radical biotech is helping to build a circular system where – as in nature – there is no waste. 🔗 To see this innovation in action, watch the full film at the link in our bio.

Biomaterials have progressed quickly over the past decade. Turning that progress into everyday adoption takes time, because materials scale when they become legible inside real product workflows, and when people can experience them in context. That is why we are launching Vibe Lab Studio @vibe.lab.studio : Polybion’s program to translate biomaterials into real, usable objects and expand real-world use through limited drops, developed together with brands, independent designers, local manufacturers, and creative partners. This is a practical step to move biomaterials from conversation to use, build familiarity through real products, and strengthen the feedback loops that help next-generation materials become conventional. Biomaterials are here, and many applications are ready today. You can read the full story in our Beacons link in bio. Most plastics can only be recycled once, if at all. Epoch Biodesign are changing that ♻️ This London-based biotech firm was founded by Jacob Nathan when he was 18 years old. The company builds on Jacob’s high school science project, which set out to find bacteria capable of breaking down plastic. Today, Epoch Biodesign use AI to design plastic-eating enzymes. Their process enables recycling at the molecular level, transforming plastics into raw materials that can go on to make new products. This radical solution creates a circular – rather than linear – path for materials. At scale, it has the potential to make plastic waste a thing of the past.

Scientists have developed a new process that uses milk waste to make biodegradable plastic. They extracted casein, the major protein in milk, and exposed it to light-activated chemistry that causes the protein molecules to link into long polymer chains with strength similar to conventional plastics. Because the material is derived from dairy waste and breaks down naturally in the environment, it offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics and helps divert food industry byproducts from landfill or waste streams. This approach points toward greener materials that reduce pollution and use existing organic sources. Source:Gomez Mesa, N.E.; Pataquiva-Mateus, A.Y.; Tang, Y.
