The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that children who were enrolled for a National Identity Number (NIN) before age 16 must update their records once they turn 16. According to NIMC, minors registered under the Enrolment Register must migrate their details to the Citizens Register through a biometric update at a NIMC enrolment centre, where their adult facial image and fingerprints will be captured. Failure to do this update could make the NIN inactive, leading to issues such as SIM card blockage, frozen bank accounts, and problems with JAMB UTME registration, especially as the 2026 exam season approaches. Parents are advised not to start a new NIN registration, as double enrolment can cause long-term identity issues, but instead visit a NIMC centre with the child’s NIN slip, birth certificate, and other required documents to request an update from child to adult records.
