Two vials contained the hantavirus (spread by rodents, with a 38% fatality rate), and 223 vials contained the lyssavirus (rabies virus, with an almost 100% fatality rate).
The most likely cause of the "disappearance" is thought to be the loss of containers during transfer to a new freezer. The Ministry of Health is conducting an investigation.

Note:- Australian authorities informed the public in 2024...three years after they went missing in 2021. An internal audit caught it in 2023.
Then in 2025, the investigation delivered its conclusion: the samples had "likely vanished during a freezer failure" and poor record keeping.

RFSouth Dakota is being hit hard by high path avian influenza this month.
Federal officials report that about 420,000 birds have been infected across eight commercial flocks and one backyard flock.
These reports make up more than three-quarters of all birds lost nationwide in the past 30 days.
North Dakota and Minnesota have also reported cases, but on a much smaller scale.
