𒆜𝒱𝑜𝒸𝑒̂ 𝒮𝒶𝒷𝒾𝒶? 💡 Harpia (Harpia harpyja), o Gavião-real … 1. 4. Os filhotes são branquinhos como na foto. Levam de 4 a 5 anos pra ganhar a plumagem adulta cinza-escuro. 5. O nome “harpia” vem da mitologia grega: monstros metade mulher, metade abutre. Linnaeus batizou em 1758. 6. Raramente plana. Prefere voos curtos e potentes dentro da mata fechada pra surpreender as presas. 7. Precisa de árvores gigantes pra fazer ninho e florestas enormes pra viver. Por isso é ameaçada pelo desmatamento. #Birdsofprey Reel by @naples.florida.life (verified account) - Bald eagle activity across Collier County intensifies through the back half of nesting season, and Naples neighborhoods along the Gordon Pass and Rook

@naples.florida.life
Bald eagle activity across Collier County intensifies through the back half of nesting season, and Naples neighborhoods along the Gordon Pass and Rookery Bay corridors are increasingly sharing space with one of Florida's most efficient apex raptors. From late fall through spring, breeding pairs shift from wide-range foraging to concentrated, territory-driven hunting. Energy demand rises as chicks develop, and prey selection becomes opportunistic. Fish remain primary, but small mammals and unsecured domestic animals fall within the same size and movement profile. In coastal Southwest Florida, that overlap is not theoretical. It is structural. The geography explains the frequency. Naples sits between protected estuarine systems and dense residential buildout, with the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve feeding directly into canals, tree canopies, and waterfront neighborhoods like Aqualane Shores and Port Royal. Mature pines and tall palms provide nesting height, while open lawns and shoreline edges create clear sightlines for descent. The corridor is continuous. The transition from wild habitat to yard happens without a break. What residents are noticing is not a spike in aggression. It is visibility. As nesting pressure increases, flight paths tighten, hunting windows shorten, and interactions occur closer to ground level. Wildlife biologists have documented similar seasonal shifts across coastal Florida, particularly in areas where estuary systems meet suburban density. The boundary is not the property line. It is the prey profile. #naplesflorida #colliercounty #birdsofprey #floridawildlife #baldeagle

A sad moment of realisation for both Caitir and Loki at the nest this morning. The second chick was no longer with them. It was a tough day yesterday, tangled in Caitir's talons first thing in the morning, not feeding well during the day, and an accidental misstep in the evening. The weather had also turned noticeably colder and wet in recent days. What the cause was, we will never know. With a three-day gap between hatch dates and the size difference that brings, this outcome is not unusual in wild raptors — but with the smaller chick showing real fighting strength against its older sibling just a couple of days ago, it doesn't make watching it any easier. The care Caitir and Loki showed this morning, brooding and tending the nest, says everything about them as parents. Caitir gently nudged. After no response she continued to brood. Loki arrived for the shift change — and he too went to brood. The older chick continues to be well looked after. Thank you for being with us through every part of this story — including the tougher ones. We'll keep the camera running. The Harpy Eagle has the strongest talon grip among these birds of prey, capable of exerting about 330 PSI, allowing it to capture large prey such as monkeys and sloths with crushing force. The Golden Eagle follows with an impressive 200 PSI grip, powerful enough to hunt animals like rabbits, foxes, and even small deer in some regions. The Bald Eagle delivers around 180 PSI of pressure with its talons, which it uses primarily to snatch fish from the water with remarkable precision. The Red-tailed Hawk has a grip strength of roughly 120 PSI, well-suited for catching rodents, snakes, and other small animals. These powerful talons are razor-sharp and curved, allowing each bird to firmly lock onto prey and prevent escape once captured.

The footage does not support AI classification. The video depicts a failed eagle adoption event. This incident occurred at Riverside Park in Billings, Montana. The juvenile was airlifted by a mature bald eagle at approximately 2:40 PM. The child was recovered from a nest site located 340 feet above the valley floor. The child was unharmed. Preliminary findings suggest the eagle had experienced a recent loss of offspring. The behavior has been classified as a misidentified adoption attempt. The eagle has not been located. Authorities have advised supervision of small children in areas with known eagle activity. #birdsofprey #baldeagle #wildlife #nature #unexplained Source: Original uploader unknown. When gravity and evolution meet at 320 kilometers per hour, this is what happens. This peregrine falcon—the fastest animal on Earth—descended from nearly 1,000 meters in a terminal-velocity stoop dive, locked onto a single starling in a fleeing flock, and struck mid-air with the force of a sledgehammer. The entire sequence lasted less than 5 seconds. The starling never had a chance. Watch the camera work hard to keep up—this is real pursuit cinematography, tracking one of nature's most explosive moments with fast pans, angle shifts, and a ground-level perspective that puts you right beneath the action. Here's the physics: peregrine falcons can reach speeds over 390 km/h in a dive, making them the fastest animals on the planet. At impact, they don't grab—they punch with a closed-fist talon strike that can generate over 400 newtons of force, enough to instantly break a bird's spine or wing. Their hallux claw (rear talon) acts like a blade. Their body is built for this: streamlined chest, reinforced skeleton, specialized nostrils that slow air intake at high speed, and a nictitating membrane that protects their eyes. Starlings can fly at 80 km/h and maneuver brilliantly, but once a peregrine locks on during a stoop, evasion success drops below 20%. This hunting strategy evolved over millions of years. The stoop dive isn't just speed—it's precision. Peregrine falcons have vision 8 times sharper than humans and can track a target while diving at terminal velocity. They adjust their trajectory mid-flight using micro-movements of their tail and wingtips. The starling's only defense? Stay in the flock, fly erratically, and hope the falcon picks someone else.
