Armored catfish are invasive and bad for the environment here in Florida so if you catch one, it’s illegal to release them back, like Tilapia as well. Their burrows create unnatural erosion here in our rivers which damages shorelines, but also they harass manatees and out-compete native fish species for food.

Who’s with us on this? Some things just ain’t right…like dumping aquarium pets into the wild ☠️ Non-native fish, plants, and animals can wreak havoc on local ecosystems. Lionfish and suckermouth catfish are 2 examples of aquarium fish released into the wild that have gotten out of control. Don’t let your pets become pests. 🔗 Check out your options at TexasInvasives.org/NeverDumpYourTank

Armored catfish are getting inked @txst is “tattooing” invasive suckermouth armored catfish in the San Marcos River to develop strategies for controlling this destructive species. Originally from Latin America, suckermouth armored catfish (aka plecos) were introduced into Texas waters through aquarium dumping. This invasive species erodes riverbanks and outcompetes native species. with @themeadowscenter #InvasiveSpeciesWeek #NISAW

#Suckermouth catfish (family Loricariidae) commonly known as plecos or janitor fish, are armored freshwater fish native to Central and South America. They are highly popular in the aquarium trade but are also a significant invasive species in many parts of the world . Extreme Hardiness: Many species are facultative air-breathers, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen water or even out of water for up to 30 hours if kept moist. Large species require tanks of 75–150+ gallons. For smaller setups, species like Bristlenose plecos (growing to 4-6 inches) are better alternatives.

This page explores what survival really looks like The suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus), commonly known as a pleco, is a hardy armored fish from the family Loricariidae found in tropical freshwater habitats. Its suckermouth lets it cling to surfaces and scrape algae and detritus for food. These fish are mostly nocturnal bottom-feeders and can grow up to around 50 cm (20 in) in the wild, though they are often smaller in aquariums. Plecos are famous for their survival abilities: they can gulp air into their specialized digestive system to extract oxygen, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen water or even up to a day or more out of water if kept moist. Because of these traits and their ability to tolerate varied conditions, suckermouth catfish have become invasive in many parts of the world, where they compete with native fish and alter ecosystems. Live wild. Stay wild. #lostmyguide #WildSurvival #plecofish

Whiptail Catfish – Fun Facts 🐍 Named for their tail – They have an extra‑long, whip‑like tail that can be longer than their body. 🛡️ Armored body – Like other Loricariids, their bodies are covered with bony plates instead of scales. 🌙 Mostly nocturnal – They’re more active at night, spending the day resting on sand or under driftwood. 🧹 Gentle cleaners – They help clean the tank by grazing on algae, biofilm, and leftover food. 🌿 Sand lovers – Whiptails prefer soft, sandy substrates and may bury themselves slightly. 🐠 Peaceful nature – Extremely calm and shy; perfect for community aquariums. 👶 Mouthbrooding dads – In many species, the male guards or carries the eggs, showing strong parental care. 🌎 South American natives – Found in slow-moving rivers and streams of Brazil, Colombia, and surrounding regions. 🎨 Natural camouflage – Their brown and tan patterns help them blend into riverbeds. 📏 Slim and elegant – Unlike bulky plecos, whiptails have a sleek, dragon‑like appearance.
