Himachal Farmer’s Blueberry Farm Turning One Acre into Massive Profit
Blueberry farming is emerging as one of the most profitable agricultural experiments in Himachal Pradesh, and the success story of Vishal Thakur from Kullu is a strong example of this change.
Vishal was working as an engineer in a corporate job in Delhi. During the Covid period he returned to his village in Kullu’s Lag Valley, where his family already owned land and orchards. While the family traditionally cultivated persimmon, Vishal decided to experiment with a new high-value crop.
After researching blueberry farming for nearly one and a half years and studying international cultivation models, he imported plants and started a blueberry farm on about 1.5 acres of land. Around ₹40 lakh was invested initially to set up the farm, and the annual operating cost is close to ₹6 lakh including fertilizers and labour.
In the first year, each plant produced around 1–1.5 kg of fruit and the farm harvested nearly one ton of blueberries. With an average market price of about ₹1000 per kilogram, the farm generated roughly ₹10 lakh in revenue and around ₹4 lakh profit after expenses. As the plants grow older, production increases significantly. Two-year plants now produce around 2–2.5 kg of fruit, while three-year plants give nearly 3 kg each. According to Vishal, after four to five years a single plant can produce about 5 kg of blueberries.
If the plants reach that stage, the total production from the farm could go up to around 10 tons per year, making it possible for a single acre to generate close to ₹1 crore annually. This experiment from Kullu shows how research-based farming and high-value crops can open new income opportunities for farmers in the Himalayan region.
