Some opening pages are reeaaaall boring. Why? No character agency. In Chapter 3 of 30 Writing Tips for Your First 30 Pages, I break down why your protagonist needs to take action—fast. We don’t follow characters who drift. We follow characters who decide. 🔥 They step forward. 🔥 They fight back. 🔥 They change the world around them. That’s what keeps us reading. #writingtips #amwriting #characteragency #writingadvice #fantasyauthor #authortips #bookwriting #howtowrite #first30pages #creativewriting #writingcommunity #30writingtips

In an era where authors could self-publish pretty easily and where a traditionally published author earns only about 10% on each book sale, you might wonder why exactly we need publishers. Publishers and their editors are the ones who decide what gets published or not. This is their key function. It’s a skill to be able to feel what will sell or not or what is worthy of the current publishing landscape. One of the most important functions is that they invest in the books they decide to publish. By investing, they are the ones taking on the risks. Contrary to self-publishing where the author would take on the financial risk, going through a publisher means that the author does not pay anything to publish his or her book and the publisher even often gives them an advance. If the book does not sell, then it’s the publisher who loses money. Of course another crucial function is that they add value to the book they publish. They’re increasing the quality of the manuscript through editing, copy-editing, design, typesetting, printing, etc.). A lot of people work on these and it is costly for a publisher to hire these services and to manage all of them. And the most visible function is of course sales and marketing/publicity. Publishers make sure to make the public aware of the books they’re publishing. This can be through events, communication with booksellers and other retailers, collaborations with influencers, online marketing, etc. Some already have a certain market capture which makes it easier but either way publishers work hard to convince customers to buy their books. It’s easy to think that big publishers almost “steal” from authors as they don’t get paid much for each book sale, but it’s important to remember that a lot goes on behind the scenes and publishers are responsible for most of it and add an incredible amount of value to a book. Self publishing might not always be the answer. 💫 What do you think about the role of the publisher? Do you think more authors should self publish? __ #bookpublishing #bookshopping #bookreel #publishinghouse #publishingindustry #fictionwriter #bookwriting #writerlife #bookaesthetic

I’ve had a few people comment and message me about how much they’d LOVE to write a book ‘one day’ BUT they have no idea where or how to even start ‘writing’. In fact, one lady told me she was scared to get started -and it was holding her back. When you set out to write a book - of course it’s daunting because it seems like such a humongous task...what’s your book about, how many words do you need to write, what’s the title, how many chapters will it have, how do I get passed writing Chapter 1 - lol! SO here’s a really simple tip to help you get into a writing ‘flow’ - instead of sitting down to try to write your book in its entirety - create a writing ‘habit’... This could take many forms depending on your own writing nature but should include challenging yourself to write ‘something’ EVERY day - I’ve given you some ideas to get you started in this reel. For me - my ‘writing habit’ translates into writing content for social media - and I do this EVERY day. I’ve been writing like this for years - for my mentoring students I write courses, e-guides and social tips ALL the time - and I should really turn those into a book! And for this account - I’m researching lots of areas for 3 books I’m working on and so I’m writing up little snippets on that and turning that into the social posts you see in my feed. 📚 If you’re interested in reading a copy of my PhD thesis when it’s available (plus 3 new book titles) - comment PHD and I’ll send you the link to join my book waitlist! Is this something that interests you - would you like more guidance on ‘how’ to write or how to write a book? #howtowrite #howtowriteabook #bookwriting #thesiswriting #phdthesis #phdbythesis #phdjourney #phdlife #jewelleryhistorian #childrensjewelleryhistory #childrensjewelleryhistorian #sarahmcaleerhistorysmith
