GAToday is the 11th of Magh.
On this very day, on a calm morning in 1830, a new lamp of enlightenment was lit on Chitpur Road, Calcutta with the formal inauguration of the Brahmo Samaj Mandir.
But the story began even earlier.
In 1828, Raja Rammohan Roy, with solitary courage, questioned blind faith and ritualism. He proclaimed that God is one, and that worship must be guided by reason, rational thought, and moral clarity.
He was later joined by Debendranath Tagore, who added spiritual depth and philosophical strength to the Brahmo ideals. As time passed, differing interpretations naturally emerged. In 1866, the Brahmo Samaj evolved into two distinct paths—the Adi Brahmo Samaj, rooted in tradition, and the more socially progressive Brahmo Samaj of India under the leadership of Keshab Chandra Sen.
As questions of leadership, ideals, and collective responsibility became more prominent, a new chapter opened in 1878 with the formation of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, led by Shibnath Shastri and Anandamohan Bose. This phase emphasized democratic decision-making, ethical discipline, and social responsibility.
The Brahmo Samaj was never merely a religious movement.
It was a humanistic revolution—challenging sati, child marriage, caste discrimination, and untouchability, while advocating education, equality, and dignity. From the heart of Bengal, it helped lay the intellectual foundation of modern India.
Standing today on the 11th of Magh,
we do not merely remember a foundation day.
We remember a legacy of free thought, reason, reform, and humanity.
This is the history of Bengal.
This is the history of the Brahmo Samaj of Calcutta.
